"Jungle Cruise," starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, topped the list with $34.2 million over the weekend, earning $30 million from Disney+ streaming service as well as hitting theaters. For Johnson's appeal and $200 million in investment, that's not a stellar performance. "The Green Knight," an Arthurian spin-off, took second place with $6.78 million, followed by last week's winner, The universal thriller "Old."
The Delta virus has spread across North America, and the outbreak has affected theater attendance in places like California. Jungle Cruise, originally scheduled for release last July, has been pushed back to this summer. Rated PG-13, the film is Disney after "Pirates of the Caribbean" "Tomorrowland", to its amusement once again adapted to the film and television. The film received an A- CinemaScore.
The good reviews focused on the charisma and chemistry of Emily Blunt and Dwayne "The Stone" Johnson, while the bad reviews focused on the fact that despite the director's many fresh ideas, the film was packed with too many subplots, CGI effects and bad jokes.
Jungle Cruise is also in the spotlight after Scarlett Johansson filed a lawsuit against Disney last week over salary sharing. But Johnson has repeatedly spoken out in public in support of the remix, and co-star Emily Blunt has been rumoured to be in a position to Sue Disney.
Delta defended its hybrid distribution model, while supporting the California government's efforts to ease control of the outbreak and keep Disneyland open.
