The greatest movie ever!
Self-important, over-dramatic, uninspired.
It's fun, it's light, [but] it has a hard time when its tries to get heavy.
View MoreA film of deceptively outspoken contemporary relevance, this is cinema at its most alert, alarming and alive.
View MoreYou know when you're on some wilderness trip, out of your element, and all these crazy, far flung 'what if' scenarios enter your head, but they never happen? In A Lonely Place To Die, one of them does, to hapless hiker Melissa George and her friends. Traversing the Scottish highlands, the group hears an eerie crying coming from a random ventilation pipe in a remote area, and unwisely digs below ground to investigate. Imprisoned in a seriously creepy bunker is a young Eastern European girl, alone and afraid. So begins their waking nightmare trying to find out where she came from, pursued by all kinds of nasties and forced to kill or be killed to protect her. There's a horde of British thugs including resident creeper Sean Harris, a faction of powerful Russian spooks led by intense Karel Roden, and all manner of psychos adding to the hubbub. As a breathless chase thriller it works wonders, with more than a few impeccably stages set pieces that orchestrate suspense well. There's violence too, as Melissa is forced to dispatch the heinous baddies in terrifically gory ways, and fighting tooth and nail to protect the girl. The plot moves in a familiar direction as far as her backstory goes and loses momentum in resolution, but they had to wrap it up logically I suppose. The film is best when it goes full on crazy, and gets into borderline horror mode, it's got a loopy sense of violence about it that is the strongest quality.
View MoreI usually dismiss small stuff like bad decision making and improbability when it's in small doses. I mean they are movies after all. BUT, this film is totally ridiculous. From repelling down a sheer-face-cliff with half the rope to reach the bottom, to not crossing a not-so-fast river, and not being able to hear someone 15 yards away, because of the 'fast-rushing-water'. It's truly absurd more often than it's not.THere are endless examples of this garbage in this flick, and the rest of it isn't much better. The acting is average, the story is just dull, the writing is deplorable, and the end-result, is perhaps the worst 6.3 movie I've ever seen.I'd pass. This sat on my netflix q for a few weeks. What a waste of space... and time.It is a very lonely place to die indeed. Pretty boy tumbles down a mountain, bashes into a tree, lands looking like and sounding-like he broke his leg. Gets up only to be running in the next scene and looking like a polo model in the face and clothes. I could go on... I'd rather not. Pass.I had a few good laughs, but I'm pretty sure this is 'supposed' to be a thriller. 43/100
View MoreWhat do you do if you find a girl trapped in a hole in the ground? Human instinct would probably have you take the girl someplace safe and make sure she goes home. Stumbling upon the girl is a kidnapping situation that goes awry. It has beautiful scenery and great acting and generates good suspense.I never found it predictable, lots of turns and fun along the way. I like stories like this where we can't take our eyes off it. UK movies seem to do a good job with that. This movie reminds me of films like Deliverance a bit where there is a scary sniper from far away, he could be anywhere and the best we can do is run our butts off. They keep it scary and interesting though and I feel they pulled it off.
View Morei had never heard of this film, but it looked interesting, as it was set in the highlands, well i wasn't disappointed. It starts with them mountaineering, on sheer cliffs, with amazing scenery, made me want to visit Scotland. Then the story starts for real, and its a roller coaster ride all the way until the end, scary, and thrilling.spoiler alert I read some of the negative reviews before i saw the film, and some of the things they said made sense, like why did they have to steal guns off the hunters, when they had their own guns? why didn't the climbers run towards the road the baddies drove down, why did the body guards mumble everything they said, but over all they are tiny things, its still a very good film, and id watch it again.
