Bad Acting and worse Bad Screenplay

I wanted to like it more than I actually did... But much of the humor totally escaped me and I walked out only mildly impressed.

Very good movie overall, highly recommended. Most of the negative reviews don't have any merit and are all pollitically based. Give this movie a chance at least, and it might give you a different perspective.

One of the best movies of the year! Incredible from the beginning to the end.

A wealthy philanthropist is found dead. The man pushed or fallen from the roof of an apartment building.Two reporters compete for the story. One detective works the case. Is it suicide or murder?More at being a murder mystery suspense thriller; than at being an actual horror.There is a good gathering of talent. Ginger Rogers, carries the story. The cast working well with her acting style.The story, is a good tale; and it could be used as a possible model for modern detective stories with titles that are of a similar nature.A Shriek in the Night, is not what I see as being a classic horror; but it is a good classic film; and will be enjoyed by fans of classic detective movies.

well I must say that this is the first movie I've ever seen with Ginger Rodgers in it,, yeah I know it's the first time I've ever seen her but lemme say wow,, yeah that's right,, the story is about a little murder mystery,, people are getting killed in an apartment complex and her and a rival reporter have to figure out who done it,, problem is both of them are trying to out-scoop the other one , and that leads them into conflict with the police as well as each other , I did appreciate the killer's way of disposing of the bodies,, I won't give it away, but let's just say you will have to watch to find out.. you don't know right away who the killer is and it really is revealed till close to the end of the movie. all in all not a bad little movie,, a little slow moving but good.

In "A Shriek In The Night" a young (22 at the time) Ginger Rogers shows some of the star quality that would, only a few years later, make her one of Hollywood's most beloved "golden age" stars. She is magnetic, and you can't take your eyes off her. To be fair, if you DID take your eyes off her in this movie, you wouldn't have much else worth looking at! The film has a captivating start, but the comedy is not particularly funny, the mystery cheats shamelessly, there is a dated "a woman's place is in the home" message, and the film drags so much it makes the running time of one hour feel like two. A couple of atmospheric scenes, the not-so-clueless-after-all inspector's assistant, and of course Ginger herself are the saving graces. Beware of some DVD covers which give away the secret of who the killer is! ** out of 4.

Mainly interesting for Ginger Rodgers ' presence:she plays a journalist who becomes a young Miss Marple to investigate a dark case which features suicide (?) ,drowning,murders .It's a strange mixture of whodunit (the culprit ,for once,is not easy to guess ) of gangsters and of journalists vying for scoops (poor Rodgers gets fired because of one of her colleagues' cheap trick).Made on a shoestring budget (there are three or four rooms in the whole movie), the only way they use to create fear is the dark,and it always works ,mainly during the last scenes.The cards with the snake are quite Doylesque .So is the way the murderer does away with his victims.
