The German soldier Clemens Forel - determined to be reunited with his beloved family - makes a dramatic escape through bitter cold winters, desolate landscapes, and life threatening ventures from a Siberian labor camp after World War II. 8000 miles and three endless years of uncertainty later, he is finally about to reach his destination... An edge of your seat drama that celebrates the power of the human spirit and the force of will, while inspired and impowered by love.

I was totally surprised at how great this film. You could feel your paranoia rise as the film went on and as you gradually learned the details of the real situation.

In truth, there is barely enough story here to make a film.

This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.

It really made me laugh, but for some moments I was tearing up because I could relate so much.

........................................................from Pasto,Colombia...Via: L.A. CA...and ORLANDO, FL Immediately after watching "So weit die Füße tragen" an inescapable question popped into my head: Why did it take nearly half a century for this movie to get made? If ever there was a film that serves as irrefutable proof of the old adage "Truth is Stranger than Fiction", believe me, "As Far as My Feet Will Carry Me" is it! Imagine trying to wrap your suspension of disbelief around all of the following elements: At the end of WWII, a German POW, Clemens Forell, is sent to a Siberian forced-labor camp, in the far northeast corner of the Soviet Union (Russia), only a few hundred miles west of Alaska. After years of the most inhumane treatment and paltry diet imaginable, Forell manages to escape with the aid of the camp Dr., his compatriot. Thusly, he becomes the most sought after fugitive in the Communist Bloc. His life-sustaining obsession: To reach his family in Germany, over 8,000 miles away, on foot! Now if this premise were presented as a work of fiction, it would seem so preposterous that, more than likely, it would have been laughed out of theaters. This film should appeal to several diverse groups: To those of you who seek out true stories; to fans of escape films; to those who enjoy Man vs. The Wild/Nature themes; to the fans of German and/or foreign cinema and to those with an interest in diverse cultures and film shoot locations. One thing that really impressed me; Most "True Stories", in recent years, stretch the truth quite a bit, for "dramatic impact"! It is obvious that this film refuses to compromise the truth. This apparent faithfulness to the original true story was influential in my decision to give it a 9* rating. By the way, very solid ensemble acting and some very beautiful exotic locations. 9* Stars ....ENJOY/DISFRUTELA!

After more than 70 years and with our historical depth of today knowledge, it is difficult to watch this movie with compassion ! The atrocities of the ruthless German side were no measure to the Soviet side, especially towards my people (children, women and elders !!), not to mention what the SS backed by the Wehrmacht did in Soviet territories till 1943...Indeed, the Soviet treatment can not be considered as "5 stars hotel" to say, but at least they were given the possibility to survive and not exterminated directly after arrival at Treblinka, Auschwitz, etc. by gas chambers and incinerated !! These people were soldiers and not helpless civilian population. If one wants to understand the Russian attitude (which I personally don't support as it was applied against their own citizens by Stalin)should watch the movie "Come and See" (1985) aka "Idi i smotri" by Elem Klimov and understand the Russian animosity towards the German soldiers (they were absolutely not gentleman). Let's put it in the right historical perspective! The roots of suffering started in Germany under Hitler were more than 90% of the population collaborated mostly willingly without a second thought or hesitation. On the artistic side the movie is too long and mainly a nice shot of the Asiatic part of Russia with a very melodramatic end...it makes new generations to think that in this criminal, unique phenomenon of the history all sides were equal in their maliciousness !

I stumbled on this movie on the Vangard channel. I watched it from about midnight on, so I was tired. I have to admit I was drawn into this film because of the nature of the main character. I enjoyed his changing situations and the make-up artist who made him look more of a despot than a human. This movie has a few areas that confused me. Like when he is being attacked by the wolves and he is transported to an native tribe/village? I also was sickened by the sudden violent attacks made by the fat river man. The movie lets you believe that our main man will survive anything, but then you get socked in the stomach by the films evil characters. I enjoyed this film. I would recommend it.

It really is a beautiful story from start to finish. As I watched it I could really feel and understand what was going on. From when he left his family in 1944 to when he finally returned in 1952 7 years later. It sheds light on the light on the Russians, As the crimes they committed during and in the wake of WWII are rarely talked about in the schools. Also it sheds light on just how much the German people knew. If your reading this review I would suggest watching it because I can guarantee it will be one of the greatest movies you have ever seen. And also I felt that the movie really was authentic because it wasn't all in one language, as many movies are these days, it was in the language(s) it was meant to be. And as you watch the movie you'll see how fate is on Clemens side. And trust me this movie is worth your time.
