The story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.

Horst in Translation (filmreviews@web.de)

"Barres" is a French movie from 1984, the year when I was born and the director here is Luc Moullet, probably one of the most known French experimental filmmakers. It only runs for 14 minutes and is certainly among his shortest works. There are black-and-white parts here and as it comes with the genre, there is no real plot or story in here. I personally am not the biggest experimental film fan, but I must say there were some okay moments in here. Overall, it is not among the best or worst I have seen from the genre. But I also cannot say that it got me curious about Moullet's other works. So overall, I would not recommend the watch, even if it is a good example of how experimentalism also existed in France and the anthem at the end reminds us about the origins here as well.
