Self-important, over-dramatic, uninspired.

Strong acting helps the film overcome an uncertain premise and create characters that hold our attention absolutely.

I had been hoping to see this documentary again for some years and then it was released on the GPO set of DVDs.It is really the equivalent of todays fly on the wall documentaries, produced by the father of the documentary movement,John Grierson. We see every aspect of the operation of Broadcasting House in Portland Place in 1935.There are some surreal moments.Whilst we are watching a producer trying to book studio space a man pops into the office to ask if there are any mice.then we have a troop of dancers doing a flashy tap dance which will of course only be heard not seen.We have Henry Hall conducting his orchestra in tails. There are so many moments like this.I have to say that if you were to do a documentary on Broadcasting House today you would be hard put to better this film.
