The performances transcend the film's tropes, grounding it in characters that feel more complete than this subgenre often produces.

The film may be flawed, but its message is not.

This is a dark and sometimes deeply uncomfortable drama

First came across this film a few weeks ago during a visit to the French West Indies. Was not sure whether I would like it. Watching it back in the UK I just could not believe my luck. The music is fantastic and storyline quite believable. Set in St Pierre in Martinique (known as the Caribbean Paris) between late 1870's and 1902 (when a volcanic eruption virtually destroyed the town and all the inhabitants, except for one prisoner). The extra item on the DVD explains that it is one version concerning the origins of Biguine music/singing. Language is French and Creole with English subtitles. I have watched it several times and also bought the soundtrack CD. A fantastic film!
