A Disappointing Continuation
This is a tender, generous movie that likes its characters and presents them as real people, full of flaws and strengths.
View MoreIt's a mild crowd pleaser for people who are exhausted by blockbusters.
View MoreThis is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.
View MoreIn 1936 St. Andrews, Scotland, Bobby Jones (Jim Caviezel) returns and everybody comes out to greet him to a hero's welcome. As a child, Bobby started hitting from a young age as he rises in the world of golf. As a young man, he must tame his temper. But at the top of the game, he decides to walk away. It's a very bland biopic. It doesn't have many dramatic turns. Director Rowdy Herrington isn't able to bring much life to this character. I'm not sure if it's the fault of the writers, the director, or the actual subject. It's like a game of golf that is more of a nice walk than anything exciting. There is about 30 minutes of Bobby as a kid which serves to forestall the start of the movie. There is just a general lack of tension.
View MoreThis film had a certain soft and contrived look that reminded me a lot of films like Seabiscuit or Field of Dreams. The sentimentality quotient was about the same, the emotionality of the soundtrack about equivalent, though this music was quite a lot better. Those other two films were a bit hard to watch, but the sincerity of this one has completely won me over. I think the film is tragically underrated. There are some films I love for their artistry, some for what they teach; this is one of the latter, and I suspect many people don't like to think how their efforts might pale in comparison with Bob Jones's. This might lead to sour-grapes negative votes for the film. I don't agree with them. Some people really do try that hard to be good and live up to expectations, and actually manage not to fall apart in the process. As one who has caved in and felt that strange, totally solitary and empty freedom of total loss of a dream of success, I could relate very well to Bob's feelings, and I was hoping he'd prevail. If the film can do that to a skeptic like me, it's done a good job. I admire the man and the filmmakers. I hope the portrayal has been accurate. It's nice to think purity of heart exists in the world. Very nice casting too.
View MoreI urge you to see the Bobby Jones movie in question. If you do, you will see what a bad movie is all about. They simply do not make movies this bad very often.I figure that the ones posting "Great Movie!!!" on this site are desperately trying to get you to rent this awful thing for a very personal reason. They want you to spend your money so they can get a little of their investor money back.Go rent it... and then spread the word.Bobby Jones movie is laughably bad! AND--they even stole the title from the TITANIC THOMPSON:STROKE OF GENIUS book! Go figure!
View MoreI have seen this "movie" and it makes paint drying look like it is in "Fast Forward." Good looking movie...but really, really bad script... and gut wrenchingly laughable direction. This cost $20 million?More Important: Does anybody know why Bobby Jones Movie producers Dawson and Eldridge "borrowed" the title of the earlier Titanic Thompson book, TITANIC THOMPSON: STROKE OF GENIUS for their Bobby Jones movie? I mean, why would they want to do that when Titanic Thompson was a noted golfer/gambler/hustler who only played golf on occasion, and Bobby Jones was...well, he was the great Bobby Jones. What came over them? And who is this HOOTIE guy? Were Kim Dawson, Rick Eldridge and HOOTIE in cahoots? (No pun intended.)I have heard this HOOTIE guy is either the guy fired from AUGUSTA golf course management team, or, he was a cohort of "ALFALFA" in the OUR GANG comedies. Anybody know which one he is? And, did THE GOLF CHANNEL ever collect their money for running their ads for the movie? The ORLANDO BUSINESS JOURNAL (http://www.bizjournals.com/orlando/stories/2005/04/04/story4.html) ran a story saying THE GOLF CHANNEL had to sue the producers for about $300,000. Wow! I guess this was an embarrassment to past MASTERS winner, Arnold Palmer, who I hear owns part of that TV channel. And finally, does anybody know for sure how much money the Bobby Jones movie lost? Now, from reviews and box office performance, this is a BAD movie... but mercifully...viewing it gave me some much needed sleep. To sum up: BAD movie...made by talentless people!
