Sadly Over-hyped

Good concept, poorly executed.

A different way of telling a story

The film's masterful storytelling did its job. The message was clear. No need to overdo.

I've only seen a few Bollywood movies, so my experience with them is limited. But even I, a German-American, could appreciate the humor of this movie and the way it poked fun at the Bollywood formula. I never expected it to be so funny and charming. I even loved the silly musical numbers. The Shakespeare-quoting grandmother was one of my favorite characters.My only experience with Deepa Mehta before this had been the wonderful trilogy Earth, Water, and Fire, so this was an unexpected surprise. I don't understand the people who are rating it so low. You can't take a movie like this seriously. Enjoy it for what it is.

Rahul Seth (Rahul Khanna) is so used to his Westernised lifestyle. Unless he got himself a nice Indian girl, his mother and grandmother will not see the marriage of his sister happening.So he hired a Spanish escort Sue (Lisa Ray) to act as his girlfriend in front of his family, even teaching her some of the common Indian practices as well.But along the way, he is starting to think that he may be getting more than what he wanted.Those Bollywood dance moves and the music are often a joy to watch and it appears in this movie as well. Kind of always bring me back to the days whenever I watched those Bollywood movies on the television. Songs and dances...both are always a common feature in Bollywood movies.Watch out what happens during the credits. It's quite refreshing.

I enjoyed this movie tremendously, not only because it is a spoof of most Bollywood movies but because it played so well on east Indian stereotypes. I found the love story interesting as it was so uncommon to see in some movies, and especially the fact that some of the content is somewhat taboo in the culture. It was also an over all fun movie. As you went on, the characters came to life until the love story suddenly hit you. I enjoyed very much the east meets west side, without focusing too much on the west (as some American movies tend to do.) I enjoyed very much the social commentary Mehta was talking of in the religious backgrounds of the two families, Sikh and Hindu. Religion played a very interesting and sometimes humorous role, and Grandmaji's comments about Hindu Gods being number one was so random and funny. Of course my most favorite part was Grandmaji's reaction to the death of the 'white whore' in a levitation accident. Overall a very funny, and witty movie and in my mind packed with social commentary.

First of all: I LOVE Bollywood movies. I know quite a lot of them. I think I got most of the references to Indian culture/Bollywood here. I loved the trailer and expected an exhilaratingly funny parody.But after having seen this movie, I just thought it was utter cr*p.The dialog had a terribly "papery" feel to them - as if someone without any sense of humor had tried to write something 'funny'. (Akshaye Khanna saying about his real-life brother Rahul 'He's like a brother to me' - oh, what a laugh!)And worst of all: the song/dance scenes are just bad - they are boring, badly directed and choreographed, and utterly uninspiring. This is probably the worst thing one can say about any movie that tries to have something to do with Bollywood...The only redeeming feature here is Lisa Ray who is indeed a very charming, lively actress. So it is even sadder that she had to star in such a bad-bad film....P.s.: 'Fire' was a quite good (albeit not perfect) movie though - maybe Deepa Mehta should stick to dramas instead?!
