Awkward teenager Charlie Bartlett has trouble fitting in at a new high school. Charlie needs some friends fast, and decides that the best way to find them is to appoint himself the resident psychiatrist. He becomes one of the most popular guys in school by doling out advice and, occasionally, medication, to the student body.

A bit overrated, but still an amazing film

FrogGlace

In other words, this film is a surreal ride.

Sameer Callahan

It really made me laugh, but for some moments I was tearing up because I could relate so much.

Charlie Bartlett is one of those movies that is usually overlooked for the very simple reason that it is a teen movie. I am guilty of this. But, it is so much more than this. The one thing that drove me to watch this movie is Robert Downey Jr. And I am glad I did. This is not one of those mushy teen movies. This one is smart, comical and has a profound message. Situations dealt with in the movie are real, relatable and gullible.Becoming a father in reel-life is a big deal for any actor. Charlie Bartlett is probably the first time Downey got a role where the interactions with kids was critical to the story. In contract to the 80s teen movie roles that he was a part of, this one had him playing an embittered, booze-loving principle who finds himself pitted against Charlie. The brash & affluent Charlie is expelled from various establishments before landing himself in a regular school. This is where he starts a business selling prescription drugs to the students thereby attracting the attention of the principal and his head-strong daughter. Personally, I feel that, if Downey had age by his side, he may well have been best suited to play Charlie. Charlie is not your usual troubled kid. There are deep seated family issues that he needs to deal with. The same is the case with the principal's daughter. Both are in situations that need them to act more mature than adults in their lives even though they really need them. My favourite part in the movie is the face-off between Downey (Principal) and Yelchin (Charlie) have. This movie is definitely worth a watch.

Charlie Bartlett is this generation's Ferris Bueller's Day Off. It's a sweet, uplifting coming-of-age film that had some social messages and can very well be a true story at most high schools. Granted, this is not the best teen film, but for what it is, it's good and often compelling despite the story skipping around a lot.Jon Poll's film is about a rich guy who has been expelled from every private school so he is enrolled in a public school. Being unpopular at first, he changes that once he becomes the unofficial psychiatrist in the bathroom stall administering drugs. There he receives the negative attention of Principal Gardner and the positive attention of his daughter, Susan. The acting is pretty good. Anton Yelchin delivers a solid performance as Charlie and is pretty convincing. However, the show belongs to Downey Jr. This is his last film before his complete comeback with Iron Man, but he is excellent as the alcoholic Principal Gardner.Overall, this is not the perfect teen film, but it manages to deliver a touching story that will ring true to many high school/college kids out there. It's smartly written and has some fine dialog. The story sometimes skips over the place, but if you can catch up it's no big deal. I rate this film 9/10.

I would just like to say that the movie is great - I loved it. It cracked me up at times and made me sad at times. However, I'd just like to say (STRICTLY OPINIONATED) that it totally sucked and lacked emotion when Kat Dennings sang at the end. I believe it was supposed to make us sad and emotionally involved in the moment, heck, there was a lady crying in the movie (the one behind the suicidal kid) but in my opinion it was one of the worst moments in the movie that sort of killed the ending. Overall, I didn't really like Kat's performance in the movie and I believe they could have found someone better for the job. She is a good actress, and I liked her in other parts and have nothing against her, but to me, she didn't really bring out or represent the character she's playing in that movie; I didn't even understand her at first.. is she one of those negative, Gothic, black-wearing people (that's what she looked like) or is she the lover type? I honestly don't get it.
