Am I Missing Something?

Great video showing the gender gap in the coding and computer science industry. This video has great examples of women in the coding/computer science industry showcasing the systemic problem of sexism and prejudice against women in the tech industry. What I took away from this video was how I use my words and actions towards woman, in any industry, and how that can hinder the progress of women in said industry. Not standing by as sexist comments are said, taking actions to end that type language. Encouraging our youth that no matter your sex, race, ethnicity or religion, you can do anything you set your mind to. Don't let society or cultural biases shape what you can do when you grow up. Makes you think about how your actions and words that you use on a daily basis could potentially be holding back a particular demographic from advancing society.

This film is a well done documentary showing the current and unfortunately growing gap between the exponentially expanding world of computer coding and women pursuing the career. Although women were historically some of the most prolific and successful coders, the career has become predominantly male driven. The film shows the challenges women have faced in some of our most well-known tech companies and how important it is to expand our perspectives two be more inclusive. Each of the women, young and old, in this film does an outstanding job of telling their story in a manner that let's everyone see the problem that gender bias plays in our society. You could clearly see that the problem is real because, despite outstanding credentials, proved skills, and successful records, these women continue to face challenges based solely on their gender. This film is highly recommended for boys and girls or anyone consider a career choice or change into a non-traditional role.

The video is filled with fairly recent data and statistics that really open your eyes to the lack of gender diversity in the tech world. However, I think that lack of gender diversity isn't solely seen in tech industry but across many fields for woman. Still, the video does shed a light to how women aren't always respected, given credit or promoted in their tech fields. It was a great film to watch, with amazing interviews of successful woman who didn't give up a job they love no matter the hardship of sometimes being the only girl in the room.

I loved this documentary. I think every educator and parent should see it, especially if you have daughters. It will be eye opening and get you thinking. How have you been affected by the homogenized culture of computer science? What are we missing out on by having such a singular prospective under-representing us? Computer sciences are an integral part of our lives. Knowing the value of diversity is the first step in making lasting and meaningful changes in the "brogrammer" fraternities that are designing our lives. Watch it. Watch it with your daughters! Take it to your administration. Then do something to a make change in your community.
