It's a good bad... and worth a popcorn matinée. While it's easy to lament what could have been...
View More"Coming Soon" is a film about a clique of girls who essentially have been sold a lie. That is, the only way to be happy is to get into an Ivy League school, get your wealthy parents to give you anything you want, and be a sexual beast with your trophy boyfriend. What the girls eventually realize is that these goals are completely hollow. The Ivy League does not guarantee your a golden future, money doesn't buy you happiness, and sex without pleasure is cheap and meaningless. Therefore the girls go on a quest to discover the pleasure of life, and learn that breaking the mold is the only way to find fulfillment. In its execution, the movie relies on "clever" but stilted dialogue, over-simplified world views, giant leaps of imagination, and a very childish way of getting a point across, i.e. ignoring logic.I am quick to applaud the goals of this film. Women deserve to be just as satisfied as men, sexually and every other way. But the way the movie gets to this goal misses the mark by a long mile. For any serious movie connoisseur who likes movies like Shortbus, Fat Girl, well basically anything covered in IFC's "Indie Sex" documentary, it's worth a viewing. But I, like the main character after her first sexual encounter, was left unsatisfied.
View MoreI'm not a big fan of teen sex comedies; indeed, I'm probably the only person in the world who's never watched "Fast Times at Ridgemount High." I never got any when I was in high school, so I'm in no mood to see other people have all the fun I missed out on. However, I saw parts of "Coming Soon" on late night cable a few years ago and have been waiting to see the entire movie. It was worth the wait. All three of the young heroines are achingly beautiful; Bonnie Root in particular shines as good-hearted Stream, the Vermont girl trying to fit in with her tragically hip Manhattan party girl friends. Tricia Vessey brings an appealing vulnerability to the role of Nel, the depressive model who blossoms when she discovers her lesbianism. Gaby Hoffmann, who made such a big impression years ago in "Sleepless in Seattle," is appropriately bitchy as the bossy know-it-all Jenny; with her bangs and dark eyelashes Ms. Hoffmann would have been great as a silent film star. The script is funny and perceptive, and the three leads are supported by a talented cast of veteran performers, especially the hilarious Mia Farrow as Stream's hippie mom. The movie scores satirical points about peer pressure and the overemphasis on getting into a "good school," which makes young people feel like failures if they can't get into an overpriced Ivy League establishment. This film has joined the ranks of "Legally Blonde" and "Heartbreakers" as one of my all-time favorite guilty pleasure chick flicks.
View More"Coming Soon" tackles the topic of teenage sex in a refreshing way-- frankly, cleverly and sensitively. I admire the writer's decision to show that the magic elixir for the story was being comfortable in one's own skin-- in other teen schlock movies, the arcs end when the protagonist finally falls in love, and it always completely contrived. (Not to say that this isn't fantastic in it's own right; I mean, who didn't love the ending to "Sixteen Candles"?) In this case, the love-focused plot lines are secondary to the self-discovery/self-actualization ideas, and therefore the story itself is all the more valuable. Plus, the whole film is charming and certainly worth seeing.
View MoreI loved this movie! I was smiling the whole time! I think all teenage girls should see it! It was smart, witty, and funny. It's mainly focused on 3 teenage girls trying to have an orgasm. It has a great cast! Bonnie Root does a wonderful job as Stream. And they couldn't of picked a better Henry (Ryan Reynolds). Rent it tonight!
