Good , But It Is Overrated By Some
For all the hype it got I was expecting a lot more!
View MoreDon't Believe the Hype
Fun premise, good actors, bad writing. This film seemed to have potential at the beginning but it quickly devolves into a trite action film. Ultimately it's very boring.
View MoreAfter seeing how high the overall rating is on this, I felt compelled to give my honest opinion. I'll be going off of considerable memory, because I saw it a few years ago and I don't want to bother watching it a second time. The line between clever and obnoxious is thin indeed. I certainly didn't feel that Dr. Horrible was so smart that it went over my head. I felt it was tailored for an audience easy to make laugh. Much like the lyrics to Wicked, the lyrics to these songs sound unnatural to human speech (for example, the usage of the word "dolt,") like the writings of a pubescent nerd itching to show you how sophisticated he thinks he is. I should know. I was that kind of kid once. As for the composing, the orchestration is flat and un-musicianlike, more suited to Dora the Explorer. Something about the sound mixing rubs me the wrong way as well; I like voices in musicals to echo. The story didn't make me worry for it, in the first place because I don't take the superhero-and- villain setup seriously (CAMP!!) and in the second place because I don't like Harris or Felicia Day as screen personalities. From my high school friends' affection for the movie, I expected I should feel a connection, but it wasn't there. Now that I think about it, I know why. Your mileage may vary, but I despise the cliché of the gawky, immature male protagonist pining after a woman much more attractive and on top of things than him. It appalls me that even women tolerate this trope, as I find it demeans us. I have read a few anthropological, sociological and scientific texts embracing the fact that women gravitate towards "alpha males." Captain Hammer, of course, is both an alpha male and a jerk. Dr. Horrible is, dare I say. . . such a Nice Guy. So it's not sad that he kills the woman he loves. Wait a minute, is this supposed to be like a Greek tragedy where we're supposed to recognize the protagonist's fatal flaws? It doesn't matter, because I didn't enjoy watching it.
View MoreWhat all blogs should be like. Neil Patrick Harris is hit or miss for me. I think he's always at his best when his performances have certain musical aspects, so I'm quite satisfied with his efforts in this fine little miniseries. The first act starts strongly with Dr. Horrible being his non-famous self having a crush on a girl he sees at the laundromat, but being too shy to talk to her. No worries though, he's just a few weeks away from real audible connection. At the end of it, we get to know Horrible's opponent Captain Hammer, as testosterone-filled as unlikable, who puts in a nice duet with Penny, Horrible's crush. On a side-note, Simon Helberg plays the friend to a guy crushing on a girl named Penny. I've heard that one before.Second act was the highlight of the whole thing. It starts right away with a beautiful (non-)duet of Horrible and Penny and resembles a lot Whedon's spectacular Buffy episode "Once more with Feeling". Thumbs up also for "I ordered one frozen yogurt and they gave me 2" Penny grows closer to both guys and NPH ends the act with a powerful "Brand new day".Unfortunately the level sinks a bit in the last act. As goofy as the whole song was, the chorus from "Everyone's a Hero in their own way" really stays in your head. Also, this act is the first time where Dr. Horrible really seems like a villain. Admittedly the first two acts he seemed more like a comic-con nerd. With this change in character, also the ending was completely not what you expected.Nonetheless, I'd recommend it. I really hope Neil Patrick Harris can score a role à la Jackman's Valjean in the next years. He really has it all to give one of the most impressive musical performances of the 21st century.
View MoreI hunted this gem missing firefly and wanting to see at least Nathan Fillion do a male display again. So I checked his list of stuff (thank you IMDb!) and came across this adorable gem.To be honest, at first I thought something mean like: Oh no... barf... some damn Broadway influence making people sing their head off, like in Disney, I just forward it sometimes or bang my head and put a nice anime where people just scream in pain bleeding instead to sing opera, which is only good for showers... and this gem.I played it and the music on repeat for the longest time, and it's in my nearby favorite of all times collection. It's just pure genius... I get shivers...I love mad scientists, sarcasm, superheroes... twists that just rip your mind out, and stuff making you go "wha... what IS THIS!!! (the ultimate villain!!!!) I like surprises... I'm very random, so I'm so glad when someone can beat me.Everybody is cute... well, mostly... But Neil Patrick Harris it utterly adorable, I haven't seen him in ages... I was so happy to see him again, he can sing my own head off if he wants to. I was actually happy to hear them sing.Well, this isn't a proper descriptive review, so don't raise your hopes up (to avoid raising them too high), and just enjoy this gem.I'm moved that it was meant to be with losing money in mind, and doing it for free... everyone gave all their fun and everything they had, out of sheer joy for the sake of doing it... Not just getting some paycheck... That explains the shine of this gem.IT'S A FREAKING GEM I TELL YOU!!! (I apologize for shooting, it's meant with love, I'm just out of words to express my admiration.) Thank you for making this. All the dark humor, so damn politically incorrect... ah the gem! I don't want to spoil anything... but thank you for twisting my heart and throwing it in my face.I liked it~ <3<3<3
View MoreJoss Wheldon's "Dr. Horrible's Sing Along Blog" was exceedingly interesting to watch. The movie was about an evil scientist who falls madly for a girl he hardly knows. They finally start talking and a perfect, strong, handsome super hero comes along and sweeps her off her feet. Throughout the entire movie Dr. Horrible longs to be considered a "super villain" and be recognized as a threat by the other villains'' of the world and more specifically the "Evil League of Evil". He also longs to be desired by the girl he fell for. He sees that the superhero isn't good for her, but is just trying to find a way to get the girl to see this. I think the whole concept of this movie is great! It might seem silly to some people but the "cheesiness" of it makes it all the more better. The singing in the movie actually helped to make clear what each character was feeling/thinking at each specific part in the movie. The diverse attitudes of the characters added an interesting flare to the movie as well. For example Captain Hammer (played by Nathan Fillian) was clearly used to getting everything he wants, and for Dr. Horrible (played by Neil Patrick Harris) things never turn out the way they are supposed to. Overall I think that this movie was fantastic! I recommend it to anyone who enjoys a little comedy once and a while!
