View MoreI'm a fan of the series, watched all the shows several times, played a lot of the games, so in short, I like Dragon Ball content. This movie however, it is just awful. The story is a joke and the whole movie is just boring.***Spoilers***Some officer from Frieza's old empire has the idea to summon the Dragon Balls and revive Frieza, who is stuck in teddy bear/rainbow hell. Frieza has proved to be no match for Goku, especially now Goku has defeated the far superior Cell, Buu and other much stronger villains and sparring partners. But Frieza has a trick up his sleeve, he never trained in his life (because he was lazy), but now he is going to train. Jup, Frieza is joining the gym. This will give him ultra mega golden super power and catches up with Goku and Vegeta (who are supposed to be more than 1000/10.000 times stronger) with a healthy carb diet and some cardio. When Frieza arrives on earth, Goku is not there, he destroy's north city, which seems to be more a inconvenience to all heroes. He uses thousands of henchmen to fight the earthen heroes as Piccolo, Krillin, Tien and Gohan, who have lots of problems killing them. Yep, that Gohan, who can tap into all of his power without even going 'super', destroyed Cell and rivaled Buu, now has trouble with henchmen. He needs a sensu bean to recover.Anyhow, Goku and Vegeta arrive, the fight in short; let's start full power, fight, that wasn't real full power, actual full power fight (Blue hair vs Golden Frieza), Frieza loses, but tricks the heroes by destroying earth and all is lost, but wait, Michael Sheen can reverse time and make everything good again. The end. What a waste of time.
View MoreSome bad guys make a wish to bring Frieza back to life. Why does he come back in pieces? Nobody else had that issue, even back when wishes had far more limitations. And why are all the good guys doing nothing despite sensing Frieza's aura? I mean, seriously, at this point they can fly anywhere they like in a few seconds, and even a bottom rank fighter like Krilin is around Frieza's power at this time. So why are they standing still for several minutes when they clearly sense someone summoning the dragon, bringing back a major villain, and then leaving in a spaceship? They were always flying to battle in previous arcs the moment they sensed something was off. They could have sent even a nobody like Yamcha to sneeze on the bad guys before they even made the wish, and the movie would be over in, like, ten minutes.Anyways, Frieza is back and he wants to kill Goku, just like every other bad guy wants in this show. But he also needs to get stronger in order to do that, since he became a small fry even back when Goku had yellow hair. Now that he got red hair, Frieza will need to get a new power up that can top even that. And he acquires said power up by training for a few months. Yeah, that is all it took to get a million times more powerful; he was simply out of shape and needed to get into a fitness program. And he did it out of screen too, because who cares about training sessions anymore? We are all here to see dumb people punching each other. So, a few months later, Frieza attacks with a bunch of minions, and we get the typical part where all the non-Saiyans are trying to hold off the bad guys, because Goku is not around to do it himself. In earlier arcs he was too far away, or was still recovering from his injuries, so taking time to get to the battlefield was excused. But no such thing happens this time. He can go anywhere he wants in an instant, he is not injured, and has Kaio available to inform him about anything that is going on with telepathy. And yet no such thing happens for several hours. It's as if everybody forgot how to use their powers all of a sudden.Anyways, the cannon fodder fights, and as always they are not trying to win, or even to weaken the enemy boss. They are just wasting time, until the only people who matter in this show after Namek arrive (which are Goku and Vegeta, duh). And holy crap, the power levels now make even less sense. Since when are we supposed to believe some of the minions are weak enough for even Muten Roshi to beat, while others are powerful enough to land punches on Picolo and Gohan. What the hell, if such powerful aliens exist, why was Frieza their leader? Or why did they bother to resurrect him, if they already had stronger successors to take over his position? What's the point? After this completely meaningless battle scene, Goku and Vegeta finally arrive, because Bulma (of all people) bothered to inform them about Frieza. They are cocky enough to fight Frieza one on one, instead of ganging up on him and ending the battle right away. Or, I don't know, letting Beerus who is even stronger than them to finish him off. Oh right, he is busy eating desserts, what a great character. What, you thought our noble heroes are here to save the Earth, protect their friends, or something trivial like that? Nope, they are here to have fun by punching stuff. And eat pudding. What follows is Frieza revealing his own personal lazy color-swapping power up, followed by Goku doing the same with yet another lazy color-swapping power up. Yellow is so last century, and red just got old last year, so let's try blue this time. With a wonderful name to go along with it: Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan. No, this is not a typo. Then the final battle happens, where Frieza is completely owned despite his fitness program. Do you know how lame it feels to see all this build up amounting to nothing? And they didn't even fight for a couple of hours like before, it only lasts a few minutes. And it all ends when one weak minions shoots Goku with a simple laser. What the hell is this, the guy could survive nuclear explosions before he even had yellow hair, and now that he has blue he gets heavily injured by a pistol? This is BS.Anyways, the Earth is destroyed for yet another time and it seems everybody died, but plot convenience says otherwise, since now there is time travel all of a sudden. Goku can go back in time and undo anything that wasn't done properly, thus having an even easier way to fix any harm the villains caused. Forget the healing beans, the dragon bringing the dead back to life; he can simply load a previous saved file and try again. Hooray for tension! Thus Goku defeats Frieza before he blows up the Earth with his trademarked Kamehameha attack. Something he could have done all along but didn't. By the way, why isn't the solar system vaporized if Goku fires energy beams at this level? I mean, even in his initial form Frieza could blow up planets with a finger. How come Earth is not blown apart by Frieza, two God Saiyans, Beerus, and Whis, simply breathing on it? Whatever, power levels are BS.Thus ends this completely pointless movie, so we can re-watch it all over again ten times longer and with crappy animation, thanks to Dragon Ball Super. Milking for the win.
View MoreI've been a fan of the Dragon Ball franchise for about 17 years and seen all iterations of its series' and movies. DBZ: Resurrection F has convinced me that this time period and set of core heroes & villains within the Dragon Ball universe needs to be abandoned in favor of expanding the lore by starting from scratch. It's not that this particular movie is bad, it's perfectly acceptable, but we've seen all this before multiple amounts of times. The Namek/Frieza saga in the DBZ anime series is widely considered by fans to be the peak of the franchise. A cat & mouse strategic hunt for the Dragon Balls followed by a season long epic battle for control/peace of the universe, for DBZ fans it doesn't get any better than that. So it makes sense that Frieza would be a logical choice for a revival & revenge story. It would be, however, had he not already died 3 times at the hands of the Z-Fighters already. By the end of the Dragon Ball GT series (set roughly 10 years AFTER this movie) Frieza was seen as a relatively weak fighter that no-one took that seriously anymore. Yet here he is, in-between deaths, posing a massive threat again. That's why this franchise is stale. Now to DBZ: Resurrection F itself. Starting with the positives - the animation is beautiful, the colors and lighting absolutely pop out of the screen. Most of the voice actors reprise their roles well (although it's a bit jarring hearing the changes in Bulma & Frieza as well as others). The humor and fight scenes have not been lost over the years. The negatives - it takes about 30mins of filler time to set up which is too long especially given the familiarity of the characters fans will already have. The story is much too simple and goes down the way everyone knows its going to with zero surprises.Verdict - Everything between the period of Dragon Ball to Dragon Ball GT has been done to death, and nothing is gained by setting any new stories in between them. We need a Dragon Ball Genesis series of movies or anime set long before the Goku era, or conversely set it well into the future focusing on the descendants of Goku & Vegeta or an entirely new planet and species.
View MoreI loved the previous DragonBall Z theatrical released, Battle of the Gods, so I was happy to catch this in at my local theater.I think I prefer the movie versions of Dragon Ball Z, than the show. Don't kill me DBZ fans, but with the movies I get all the action without the wait. I'm an impatient geek who can't wait six to seven episodes to see the action. and the movies bring the action fast. And the action on this was dope. I got to see people like Piccolo and Kuririn getting into real fights, Something I have not seen in a long time since the DBZ foes are far too powerful for them to face. The return of Freeza was epic. My favorite villain in the Dragon Ball spectrum. Brings me back to my boyhood when I was a huger anime freak.Speaking of which, this movie is perfect if you are an anime fan. It was just so much fun to watch. Just like with Battle of the Gods it's a who's who in the DBZ world, and just like Battle of the Gods the movie strangely develops the one-dimensional protagonist Goku by poking fun at his drive to become more powerful.Plus I like the animation itself more with less computer generated images blending into the 2D style, than with Battle of the GodsMakes me need to go back and watch the whole series over again.
