A Major Disappointment

Griff Lees

Very good movie overall, highly recommended. Most of the negative reviews don't have any merit and are all pollitically based. Give this movie a chance at least, and it might give you a different perspective.

The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.

It’s not bad or unwatchable but despite the amplitude of the spectacle, the end result is underwhelming.

A rarity that a little film devoted to a whole series comes across your screen and is actually pretty decent. Yes the film is about fans of the Star Wars saga, but the subplot of their devotion of a friend who is dying of cancer gets lost along the way. The film centers around going to Skywalker Ranch in California to steal a preview of the new Star Wars film. A lot of hijinks and comical disasters happen along the way. The humor is vulgar, set as in revenge of the nerds style. I enjoyed the film and it has Kristen bell in it which is always a bonus..

This is the second time I've watched this movie. The first time I watched it was years ago and I liked it because I'm a big star wars fan. But over the years I've become a cinephile. And so, the second time I watched it, I loved it, not because of my fanaticism, but because of the cinematography, acting, etc.The acting is solid, the plot is good-hearted, the scenes are funny, there's actual character development. The cultural references are witty and smart. I didn't even remember Jay Baruchel was in this movie. Oh, I almost forgot about Rush! As a Rush fan, pumping up Rush songs on the van was awesome. There were lots of cameo appearances which I enjoyed: Seth Rogen as the trekkie and the pimp was hilarious, his comedic range really shines in this movie. Danny Trejo, Ethan Suplee, Billy Dee Williams, William Shatner, Carrie Fisher, Kevin Smith & Jason Mewes, Will Forte & Craig Robinson, Danny McBride, the list goes on...This movie is a classic and will only turn better with time, just like a good wine. Every scene is comedic gold and really quotable. A coming-of-age movie about 4 young fanboys. One of the most underrated movie ever. Too bad it was a box office failure.8/10

What's nice about "Fanboys" is that it takes us back to that pre-"Episode I" period when Star Wars fans weren't divided along trilogy lines (if you've spent much time on the Internet in the last, let's say 14 years, you'll know what I'm talking about). It was an innocent time, believe it or not.The charm of this movie is due to its cast. Our five heroes are a likable group of actors. Jay Baruchel, Dan Fogler and Kristen Bell get the best lines, and seeing Bell take down Fogler in a headlock was pretty funny. I do love her character's spunk. And the filmmakers went to some lengths fill out the rest with famous faces (the names here will surprise you). A lot of the humor here rests on cheap gags and a few tired jokes (most of which is aimed at the die-hards in the audience), but for the most part, "Fanboys" is a fun road trip.6/10

Fanboys is an extremely overrated comedy, about four friends, who decide to break in to George Lucas's home, in order to steal a copy of Star Wars: Episode 1, six months before it hits theaters. The movie was very well reviewed and had a big word of mouth following, and being a huge Sci-Fi fan, I couldn't wait to see it. The story however was extremely weak and filled with cliché Star Wars jokes. It was predictable, done, and lame. The only really cool thing about the film was the cameos. In this tiny independent film they had cameos by William Shatner, Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams, Kevin Smith, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, and Seth Rogan, an impressive list to be sure! Like I said thou, the movie was weak and done. Unless you're a die-hard Star Wars fan, I'd skip this one.
