Gas Planet Trailers

In a distant galaxy, three natives of Gas Planet carry on with their quest for nourishment. Their behavior is definitely alien, but also comically familiar to an earthling audience. Gas Planet is an in-house release from ANTZ co-director Eric Darnell with support from PDI's Character Animation Group. The look of Gas Planet reflects the organic qualities of hand drawn imagery while maintaining the 3D advantages offered by computer animation.

It’s fine. It's literally the definition of a fine movie. You’ve seen it before, you know every beat and outcome before the characters even do. Only question is how much escapism you’re looking for.

I worked on this a little. (We reshot this to film at PDI south) Now, I am a teacher and I love to show this to my students as a treat, and also, I use this to teach inferences.

"Gas Planet" is a 1992 animated short film, so next year it will have its 25th anniversary. The writer and director is Eric Darnell, who is pretty well-known for his Madagascar movies. When he made this one we have here, he was still very young and new to animation filmmaking, so you should not expect too much. In my opinion this film was all about the (looks of the) characters and also the animation, which was fine for early 1990s. However, in terms of the plot and story, this was really not a good or memorable film at all, which ultimately cost it. I myself think it's good it was this short (under 3 minutes), because this way it is watchable and you won't be bored too much. Nonetheless, it just wasn't good enough to let me recommend it. I give it a thumbs-down.

People who see this short film today might be a little harsh towards it because the CGI is clearly a generation behind current computer animation. However, back in 1992 GAS PLANET was practically state of the art--especially because practically no one other than Pixar and a few others were doing computer animation--it was still in its infancy. Remember that TOY STORY didn't come out until three years after GAS PLANET.The film features three bizarre looking bird-like creatures that look hilarious and you can't help but laugh as they bounce about and eat gas balls. It's all very cute and will probably appeal most to kids who will love watching these birds fart. Frankly, as a supposedly mature adult, I still laughed at their goofy antics.Well done and exceptional for 1992.

'Gas Planet' is a pretty funny animated short film. Three strange creatures are on the Gas Planet. Something appears from the ground. It is a stick with four balloons on it. The creatures eat the balloons and apparently what is inside causes gas problems. For 1992 it looks quite good as well.
