Pretty Good
Overrated and overhyped
While it is a pity that the story wasn't told with more visual finesse, this is trivial compared to our real-world problems. It takes a good movie to put that into perspective.
View MoreA clunky actioner with a handful of cool moments.
Despite the excellent cast (except for Ms. Carano who simply is not an actor by any standard, even Ed Wood's) and director's efforts, this movie is almost awful. Most of the time nothing really happens and so called fights are obviously designed for (again) Ms. Carano. What is she doing in this movie (or in any, for that matter), especially as a main character? No acting abilities, fights and wins opponents who could "eat her for breakfast" and so on. But she can run. Maybe look good (depending on the taste). That's it basically. Writers of this movie should be put before the firing squad and/or prohibited to work anywhere and anyhow. Ms Carano should remain in C or D movies, where she belongs. Other cast - shame on you for participating in this waste of time. No, salary is not an excuse.
View MoreHaywire has Gina Carrano who is a private contracting secret agent who has a confrontation with colleague Channing Tatum at a diner which gets ugly when he tries to force her to go with him. A kid played by Michael gallantly intervenes and saves her. But he hardly realizes what he's gotten himself into.Turns out Carrano had just gotten home from missions in Barcelona and Dublin and it was in the latter she was set up for a murder. The only question is which of her colleagues betrayed her. As it turns out she was planning to leave the agency and someone thought she was expendable. Some retirement plan.Half the film is in flashback as Carrano tells her tale to her new ally Angerano and the other half trying to identify her betrayer.I wasn't terribly impressed with the film overall though it does have some moments. Things get a bit incoherent at times with the story. I did however love her final confrontation scene with her betrayer and how said betrayer meets his demise.Michael Douglas and Antonio Banderas are in this and have the look of men happy their paychecks cleared. Not the best spy thriller out there.
View MoreWith Steven Soderburgh at the helm and a multi A-list line up (Ewen MacGregor, Antonio Banderas, Michael Douglas, Michael Fassbender, Bill Paxton & Channing Tatum), this should have been far far better than it turned out to be. That being said, it's largely unknown main player Gina Corano does a fantastic job in the lead role. The extras on the DVD would suggest that this whole project was built around her, which is amazing in itself, using an amazing amount of recognised talent around somebody who was only really previously known as an MMA fighter. She was obviously unphased by all this and easily comes out as the star of the show. The plot is a little confusing at first, but given that it was a mere 88 minutes long, it soon pieces itself together. Most of the main stars roles, apart from MacGregor, are not very big at all but it's not the acting that is the fault here....it's the character building. Basically, there isn't any at all (probably due to the films length), which suggests to me that Soderburgh could have made a longer, more intriguing movie. The films premise is quite intriguing itself, but it's lack of feeling leaves the viewer a little flat. Soderburgh does not however focus on Corano's fighting talents alone.....to me he has helped to create a very good actress and this reflects in some of the films that she has appeared in since. To sum up....I found this quite a good spy thriller, but in the main I was left a little disappointed when there was so much talent on show.
View MoreFirst, i really liked the fighting scenes, they came without needles cuts and were well executed. Also, the first girl that runs like a man, or just how it should look when someone runs properly.... but the rest is so bad. Gina, although I like her, can't act at all. She acts like a beautiful mummy. No face expression that matches the scenes well. The casting was awful too. It really looked like some top acts try to act like some B-Movie actors.... looked wired. McGregor is to big a Star as could he plausible play such a looser running away from a "girl". You could read in all of those faces "When do I get my money...?".Storyline is so meh. James Bond type hero gets betrayed by his bosses and starts a revenge. Must be the first Movie of this kind ^^.And who did the light? Or was that absolute horrid stage lighting made on purpose, so you only saw her face half of the time in the hole movie? No thrill at all, literally hours of running and chasing and you never get these goosebumps, cause you wont fear something could happen to the main cast. This movie purpose is only to grab your money.
