Although it has its amusing moments, in eneral the plot does not convince.
View Morea film so unique, intoxicating and bizarre that it not only demands another viewing, but is also forgivable as a satirical comedy where the jokes eventually take the back seat.
View MoreIt is neither dumb nor smart enough to be fun, and spends way too much time with its boring human characters.
View MoreThere is, somehow, an interesting story here, as well as some good acting. There are also some good scenes
View MoreI was hoping this movie would be as hilarious and fulfilling as Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. Unfortunately, it falls flat in every way. The schemes, plot points, and romance seem contrived and/or forced. They just don't make logical sense. And I didn't find most of the humor funny, either. Also, the characters aren't that interesting or believable. I don't understand how so many people could give this movie good reviews and ratings. It's a massive letdown compared to Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. So disappointed.
View MoreTo borrow the quote from songwriter Engel Franz, "The smile that made a dream begin, clouds your vision you been living in, she whispers oh such pretty lies, don't believe her for when she look into your eyes, love just isn't there, cause she doesn't care, Brother beware, Oh Brother beware, Brother take care, cause the Female of the species is Deadlier than Male." Watched this movie about a Mother Daughter con artist team of Sigorney Weaver and Jennifer Love Hewitt. They take multiple alias from former jobs, mainly marring men and leaving them when the settlement is reached. Their coming off their last swindle from Body shop/Chop shop crook Dean Cummano (Ray Liotta) who as far he knows woke up to a mess. Max Conners,(Weaver) catches Dean in a compromising position with his newly hired secretary played by of course her Daughter Page (Hewitt). Max expeditiously gets the divorce from Dean with the usual hefty settlement her half of the money. The con is complete! Page has lunch with her divorcée Mom discussing her firm butt in addition being an expert with a deck of cards (loaded deck) wants to branch off on her own. The barracudas The Conners go to the bank to withdraw what's coming to them. An IRS examiner (Anne Bankcroft) stops them and says," You owe us several hundred thousand dollars in taxes forgetting to file the past 7 years. Even with the cash settlement it isn't enough. The two cons are in a bind with 90 days to pay or become love slaves in a jail wearing orange jumpsuits. Time for another hustle.Speaking of wardrobe, kudos to the set designers and clothing departments as Weaver and Hewitt look stunning throughout the picture. Off to Palm Beach, Florida where cons and Hollywood decided that rich widowers and bachelors live seeking female companionship., i.e. Some Like It Hot. Page and Mom agree this is their last con together in hopes of cashing in and paying off the IRS and having enough leftover for Page to go on her own. Their next target is the Millionaire tobacco King Willaim Tensy (Gene Hackman) who is perfectly cast as a "Hacking Man" who has an advanced case of emphysema where he literally drops to his knees in a coughing rage during a high value auction. Max portrays a Russian woman and makes her move on Tensey as he quickly falls for her . Meanwhile Page in her mini dress walks into Bar outside of town on the way to Tensey's estate waiting for a call from Mom as to put a tire trap of nails on the road for Tensey's Rolls Royce to run over causing him to crash and have Max save him and then do her love hustle on Tensey in hopes of Marriage and a big payoff. At the bar a young gentleman offers Page a drink Jason Lee (Jack) who is scolded by the Hostile Page and when her speech was done Jack simply said he is the Bartender and she backed off. The call was made by Mom to leave and set the trap. Smitten by his encounter with the feisty vixen Jack follows Page and runs over the nails and crashes his station wagon. One thing leads to another as the two discover each other naturally against Mother's wishes as work has to be done in marrying Tensey first. The story gets more involved with Weaver showing her singing talents at a Russian restaurant and Hewitt's secret meetings with Jack and their dialogue about watching the stars is laughable. Great performances by Nora Dunn as the suspicious house keeper to Tensey who also gets swindled. Anne Bankcroft as the sturdy IRS examiner shows a confidence that can never be unraveled. Ray Liotta shows his comedic timing and fishing skills by firing his gun in the water telling the in-laws he's a College Professor who teaches College S--T! Wasted appearances by Sarah Silverman and Zach Galifianakis as they had a few straight lines a piece as Jack's Buddy's at the bar. Jason Lee appears to be a bit wooden and colorless but it works well being the straight partner for Hewitt's nasty lines and comebacks. The thimble rig chain of events will lead up to a wedding day for one of the woman. Good to see sex predator Jeffrey Jones who has a short cameo and put on a few pounds as the Hotel manager. I truly enjoyed this canard of chicanery with Weaver and Love Hewitt who has an uncanny resemblance to Hallmark channel's Lacey Chalbert. By the way when dining out add a little chard of glass on your plate for a free meal.
View MoreFunny how easily guys can be fooled by women, but this movie is all about that. Tragically some women can't be trusted, especially when they're working on man's weakness, by using temptation. The movie takes maximum advantage of all the funny things that can happen when a mother and daughter team of marriage con goes out to dig the gold out of rich men. Unfortunately, the daughter falls for incorruptible decent bar owner. But the plan is still to con the guy into being seduced by the mother (who's pretending to be the cousin of her own daughter) on the night of the wedding of the daughter to the bar owner. The movie is a comedy but hits close to home about how men can be conned by having wool put over their eyes in the name of love, and by some forceful means. That's what makes this movie an extra delight to watch. The movie is actually a love comedy with a twist, and lives up to both the comedy, and romance aspect of the story as well.Jennifer Hewitt and Sigourney Weaver puts on great performance as well as the supporting casts.Great movie that I wish they made more of its kind.
View MoreHow did well-established professionals like Sigourney Weaver, Gene Hackman, and Ray Liotta become involved in this trash? Sure, it's watchable. Sure, Jennifer Love Hewitt is sexy. Sex comedies can be a lot of fun--but this? Weaver plays a woman who uses her body to lure male suckers into marriage and is teaching her daughter to do the same.Nothing wrong with being a whore, I guess, if you are supplying a useful product at a reasonable price. But in this case the two women are felons, deceiving men in order to get all of their money, and doing it over and over, marriage after marriage.Okay, lots of funny movies have been made about rascals, both male and female, who marry foolish or stupid people in order to get their money. But these woman are much worse than mere rascals. They are congenital liars, lying even to each other and to people (such as love interest Jack) whom they love. They're such liars and cheats that they cannot even order lunch in a restaurant without making it a con job. They are also sluts. Hewitt spends virtually the entire movie in micro short dresses that make her body look like a statue of a fertility goddess, all in order to tease. Weaver similarly flaunts her body to tease and cajole men, over and over.We are supposed to overlook this behavior because--for example--Hewitt's character really loves Jack, though she has an astounding way of showing it. As for Jack, he is monumentally stupid not to see her for what she is.Nevertheless, the last 20 minutes of the movie goes to great lengths to make us believe that these two women are, after all, lovable. There is that tender moment (with the inevitable tinkling musical accompaniment), when Hewitt pledges her love to Jack. And then--oh, wonderful!--that moment when mother and daughter embrace. Weaver really is a good mom after all! Oh, thank goodness! She's just like everyone else's mom! Apparently I am one of the few reviewers of this film to find it offensive.
