King Androcles of Thebes commands a ship in search of a threat to Greece, predicted by an atmospheric oracle. Hercules is part of the crew, but the strongman falls overboard in a thick fog. Washed ashore, he saves a young Ismene from Proteus, an evil, shape-shifting creature. Ismene takes Hercules to Atlantis, where he discovers that her mother, Queen Antinea, has captured Androcles. Hercules schemes to rescue him and thwart Antinea's dream of world conquest.

Strong acting helps the film overcome an uncertain premise and create characters that hold our attention absolutely.

I am not sure why this particular Hercules movie was retitled "Hercules and the Captive Women", when my recollection is that there is only one woman who is held captive in the entire movie. Anyway, I feel I should admit that though I love Italian genre cinema normally, these sword and sandal movies I generally find to be easily dismissed, including this particular one. Reg Park does make an okay Hercules, and there are some solid production values here and there. But the script is both messy and a real slog to sit through at times. There's far too much talk and not enough action. And the movie seems to be moving from one plot point to another in an almost random fashion - there's very little connecting one plot turn to another. The writers should have had a very clear vision from start to finish before they started typing on their typewriters. If you do decide to watch this movie despite my warning, search hard for a good print, because the public domain prints out there are so rough-looking at times that some scenes are next to impossible to make out.

Because of some strange environmental occurrences that threaten his kingdom the King of Thebes, "Androcles" (Ettore Manni) is compelled to sail to the island of Atlantis to resolve the situation. Unfortunately, he is unable to convince anybody else in Greece to make the voyage with him and he is forced to accept a crew consisting of criminals and other undesirable characters. Realizing that he needs people he can trust he convinces a midget by the name of "Timoteo" (Salvatore Furnari) ) and Hercules' son, "Hylas" (Luciano Marin) to sail with him. But the man he really wants is "Hercules" (Reg Park) who turns him down. Not satisfied with that answer he drugs Hercules and sets sail with his unconscious body aboard anyway. Along the way the crew unsuccessfully attempts to mutiny and Androcles leaves them stranded on an island with only his 3 other companions still on board. Soon a storm washes them upon the shore of Atlantis where they find themselves separated from each other and having to face certain challenges upon their own. Anyway, rather than detail the rest of the story and risk spoiling the picture for those who haven't seen it I will just say that this film wasn't quite as good as the two movies, ("Hercules" and "Hercules Unchained") which preceded it. Although it had some humor the rest of the movie seemed to be lacking in both suspense and excitement. Additionally, the film quality wasn't very good and some of the graphics bordered on being comical. Slightly below average.

Antinea, the amoral anti-heroine of Pierre Benoit's fantasy novel "Queen Of Atlantis", lords it over a lost continent where Hercules gets shipwrecked and it's a good thing he does, too, because the evil queen's created a race of supermen and set her sights on world domination. Here, Atlantis is a land of dry ice, colored lights, lizard men, and lots of lepers with the prerequisite revolt and, of course, a climactic cataclysm. The movie's got a bigger budget than most "sword & sandals" and Hollywood B-movie babe Fay Spain makes an icy empress but Reg Park's musclebound Hercules is a tad too lethargic. Typical escapism for a Saturday matinée back in the day. Best line: Upon arriving in Atlantis, Hercules is told "We worship Uranus".
