Clever, believable, and super fun to watch. It totally has replay value.
View MoreIt is not only a funny movie, but it allows a great amount of joy for anyone who watches it.
View MoreThe tone of this movie is interesting -- the stakes are both dramatic and high, but it's balanced with a lot of fun, tongue and cheek dialogue.
View MoreStory: It's very simple but honestly that is fine.
I first saw this movie not long after it came out in 2008 and having not seen it again since I thought I'd give it another go seeing as I couldn't really remember any of it. Having now watched it again, there's a good reason WHY I hardly remembered it from the first time and why I won't be watching it again. This is a pretty slow going film for the most part which isn't a bad thing if the story keeps your attention and entertains you. Unfortunately, The Horsemen struggles to do either and even though it starts off well enough it doesn't take long to fall away, and any grip it may have had on you from the first 20 minutes or so, just loosens up and lets go. Some of the more "artsy" shots tend to get a bit annoying as well...extreme close-ups of faces, lighting of cigarettes, etc. I know this is supposed to help with mood but it kind of fails in this film. Also, when you finally see who the Four Horsemen are and their motives for doing what they do (although this isn't spelled out for you...you have to piece it together yourself), you feel disappointed because you were hoping that it would be so much more than what it was.Another issue for me was that Ziyi Zhang was completely miscast as Kristin...not because she done a bad job but because she was just the wrong person for this role. Zhang was 29/30 during the making of this film - her character was a minimum of 12 years her youth. I know actors can tend to play younger parts but 12 years younger?! The rest of the cast were decent enough but there weren't really any stand-out performances. After all of that you probably wonder why I never rated it lower than what I did. Well, there were still some decent parts scattered throughout, it was a very dark & moody thriller (which I like), and the twist at the end wasn't too bad (at least on paper anyway as the execution of it wasn't the best).Overall, The Horsemen isn't a horrible film, but there is more things wrong with it than there are right ones.
View MoreHorsemen has a lot to say and not a lot of time to say it in. Given the fact that what it ultimately wants to say is nowhere near as compelling as it thinks it is, the film turns from intriguing to unwelcome guest with the flick of a switch. What's so aggravating is that it starts off so well and sets you in for a nice little police procedural/murder mystery. Unfortunately, director Jonas Akerlund and writer Dave Callaham don't like those kinds of movies. As they parade a cast of recognizable actors playing dead end characters across the screen, you start to realize why this was shelved from theaters and plopped down in straight-to-DVD land. Poor Dennis Quaid. It could have been a spine-tingling chiller in the tradition of Seven and Silence of the Lambs, but instead it belabors an overwrought message to no fanfare whatsoever. What it tries to accomplish is not earned in its woefully short running time where other superior thrillers are just getting going. This film is full of woulda coulda shoulda and it's a crying shame. The only positive is seeing Dennis Quaid in a good lead role, but it's wasted in spades.
View MoreThis frightening and suspenseful thriller concerns about an unsettling and bitter cop emotionally affected for the death of his devoted wife by cancer , being trapped into a dark and tenebrous environment . It's a stirring and moving story full of twists and turns ; however being pretty claustrophobic . This exciting picture contains thrills, chills, plot twists, action-filled and lots of gore and guts . The movie centers on a Detective named Aidan Breslin (Dennis Quaid) , an expert on forensic Odontology , as his chief (Chelcie Ross) assigns him to investigate a weird chain of murders that bear a rare marks on trees and surrounding. The ominous killings have a rare phrases as ¨ We are nothing ¨ from Exodus 1,5 and ¨Come and see¨ , as he finds out it proceeds from Book of Revelation of the apostle Saint Joan . Meanwhile , Aidan holds a problematic relationship to his oldest son named Alex ( Lou Taylor Pucci) . Investigating a series of murders of strange violence, he discovers a horrifying link between himself , his dark secrets and the suspects that seem to be based on the Biblical prophecies dealing with the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse: War, Famine, Pestilence, and Death ; resulting to be the leader a horseman riding a white horse. Breslin is helped by a tough inspector ( Henry Collins Jr) and a forensic expert ( Barry Shabaka). In the picture there are psychological issues , plot twists, emotion, mystery , spooky sets and a little bit of gore. The movie turns out to be a crossover between the religious intrigue from ¨Crimson rivers : Angel of Apocalypse ¨ , the suspension tortures from ¨The cell¨, investigations means of ¨CSI¨, and ¨Seven¨ thriller. From the beginning of the film until the end the suspense and intrigue is unstopped . The creepy images of wide range from the genuinely eerie to the bizarre along with scary and amazing frames . It's predictable but also its predictability is redeemed for some extraordinary surprises and in part by the charismatic acting from the main protagonists . Acceptable performance by Dennis Quaid as unlucky Inspector who distances from his two sons and good support cast formed by Ziyi Zhang, Patrick Fugit , Peter Stormare , Eric Balfour and Paul Dooley , among others . Thrilling musical score fitting to action and tension by Jan Kaczmarek who formerly won an Academy Award for ¨Finding Neverland ¨. The flick is middlingly directed by Jonas Akerlund , a Videoclip-maker in his first and only picture. The movie obtained a bit of success but failed at the box office. Rating : 5,5 . The motion picture will appeal to religious thriller buffs and dark atmosphere enthusiasts.
View MoreI don't know much about the Horsemen of the Apocalypse in terms of its bible elements. I hadn't seen Se7en which sounds similar in terms of plot. And I should probably check that one out because this movie was really uninvolving, moved too fast and performances are uninspiring and boring.Dennis Quaid plays a frustrated single father of two kids, who is out to investigate a series of killings which resemble a link to the four horsemen from the apocalypse. That's pretty much all you need to know because everything else seems to go by in a blur.Ziyi Zhang, who I am a fan of, was unconvincing in this role. There is just something about her playing roles which requires a lot of English which doesn't click with her for some reason. I think she did an alright job in terms of her pronunciation - she has obviously made an effort to improve her English after seeing what Memoirs did for her. But I think it's going to take a bit more time until she fully can grasp it. But at least she is trying. Her attempt to play a psychopath was not convincing at all and she really wasted her time doing this movie. The murders in this film go from one to the next, with no real dramatic effect and simply to speed up the story. Characters aren't developed enough, and more should have been done on Quaid's wife subplot (though hardly) story involving his son.Lucky I got this movie for $1 at the Blockbuster Video Store liquidation sale. Hmmmm...maybe I should have suspected this wasn't going to be great if they wanted to get rid of it for $1. Oh well, next time I'll learn!
