Excellent, smart action film.

While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.

The biggest problem with this movie is it’s a little better than you think it might be, which somehow makes it worse. As in, it takes itself a bit too seriously, which makes most of the movie feel kind of dull.

House of the Living Dead disappoints in virtually every way, with absolutely no zombies to speak of, terrible pacing, and an absurd mixture of the supernatural and mad scientist genres.Long story made short, a crazed mad scientist has developed a way to steal the souls of animals and people. (Wait a minute, I thought animals weren't supposed to have souls...) He switches identities with his sane twin brother, and all hell breaks loose.Everything about this film is awful. The pacing is snail-like, with long periods devoted to an old woman warning her incoming daughter in law that something awful is about to happen. Combine that with a laugh inducing ending (involving the vengeful spirit of a HORSE!) and you have a recipe for cinematic disaster. If you're in the mood for a Victorian era horror film in the style of Hammer Studios, go rent an actual Hammer film, not this tripe.

Voodoo and mad science experiments on a plantation in the 19th century. In the tale of two brothers and a mother running the plantation, the mother is of the opinion that the madness of the family should end with them. One son isn't certain and has sent for fiancé. Gothic nonsense results. Woefully talky "horror film" plays like an Andy Milligan film on a bigger budget and with a better sense of framing a shot. The film looks good (even in the poor copy I saw) but outside of that this is a chore to get through. The plot is so all over the place that it becomes silly, especially with the twists that occur. The performances are equally uneven from fine to you must joking histrionics. Nothing compares to the endless inane dialog that just bores. Recommended only for insomniacs.

You know, this had some potential. The plot is out of that Baskerville, Pyncheon mode, where a family has had a history of horrible personages who have died unnatural deaths. There seems to be an almost satanic element at work. In the old days they would have felt that there was a curse because of some ancestor's evil actions. A man who is "cursed" and has an evil brother, brings his young fiancée to his home. His mother tries to drive her away because she wants to see the lineage end. The brother is apparently deformed and mad and stares from the window upstairs. This sound like a lot of fun. The down side is a rambling, endless story that goes on and on. There are a number of chases that contribute little to the events. The young woman is continuously roaming the mansion and it takes two or three minutes to get to a destination. The upside is that there is lots of suspense and some excellent surprises (not that it hasn't been done before). See this. It's OK.

The title of this film is very misleading, because there are no zombies here. This South African horror deals with science and magic. The script is actually decent, but the film is really boring and dull, and there's no gore at all.To be fair, there are two or three suspenseful scenes, and the ending is quite exciting-this is enough for me to classify "House of the Living Dead" as a decent horror film,so I'll give it 5 out of 10.
