Self-important, over-dramatic, uninspired.
Tells a fascinating and unsettling true story, and does so well, without pretending to have all the answers.

View MoreI congratulate myself for going to watch it in the theater ! It was my luck that my friend dragged me to watch this timeless masterpiece by the Guru "Sanjay Leela Bhansali". Otherwise I detest chick-flicks like DDLJ and Devdas - crap it is in comparison to this Magnum Opus! Firstly, the ravishing performance by Rai - the deserving Miss world and film fare award for this performance. And the sensitive performance by Ajay who made this film a classic. His unconditional and selfless love towards the heroine! Salman was okay. Looked good but didn't act well.Other factors like music, cinematography, choreography and locations add value to the flick and make it a BLOCKBUSTER!! A worthy successor to the music Singing in the Rain'.An infinite out of ten from my side!!
View MoreAs with nearly all my viewing, this was recommended by a reader.I admit that I am not as familiar with these films as I should be. Just based on popularity and persistence, they need to be understood. Gosh, it about 1 1/2 hours straight of two people falling in love before any drama sets in. Then it shifts to Budapest posing as Italy; I guess the audience would not know the difference. The negatives are obvious. It is just too long for the trivial story. There are cultural stereotypes whose behavior must be essential to the pleasure of the thing, stereotypes I did not know. There is a ton of singing and dancing but like an Andrew Lloyd Weber musical, it all sounded and looked much the same. The girl who is such a beauty that she causes two good men to fall in love dangerously deep... she's a petulant, selfish brat. But the colors and the staging are so lush that I got a sugar high and was just about sad to see it end. I don't know anything like this in the west where the simple show is so dominant and so well done. And this is well done. There is a kite-flying scene that just took my breath away. I replayed it a few times. One of the few dramatic moments is when the couple has to be permanently separated. She hears about it an rushes through the house; her dress catches fire and she doesn't even notice, the dancing colors adding to the way the environment tells us what is going on.I won't ruin the ending. Anywhere else I would gag, but here it was a reward — truly romantic. Now I have to look up more of this fellow's work. The way he uses the environment reminds me of a young Yimou Zhang.Ted's Evaluation -- 2 of 3: Has some interesting elements.
View MoreBhansali made Khamoshi and though getting high ratings by critics the film was rejected by audience. With HDDCS Bhansali has won the confidence of both critics and audience.Nandini(Aishwarya Rai) falls in love with Sameer(Salman Khan), a music disciple of her father.Sameer also deeply loves Nandini. But her conservative father is against the relationship and sends Sameer back to Italy ,where he came from.He marries off Nandini to Vanraj(Ajay Devgan).Vanraj comes to know about the relationship between Nandini and Sameer. He then ,defying the society, decides to take nandini to Italy to hand her over to her love,Sameer. And then starts the beautiful journey of love, affections, confusions and hesitations all of which I think are the beauty of human emotions. Ajay is awesome and the movie is a must watch just because of his performance. He has perfectly portrayed an ordinary looking, shy yet bold guy. Aishwarya delivers her best performance ever as an aggressive and defying lady.Salman looks good in his nonsense "cool guy" act.But He gets over that nonsense stuff and delivers in the climax. The music of the movie is a class act by Ismail Darbar. Songs like "Aankhon ki Gustakhiyaan" and "Chaand Chhupa" will always be remembered.Kavita Krishnamurthy is fabulous.Kay Kay has delivered his best with "Tadap Tadap ke".Hariharan's "Jhonka Hawa ka" is one of the best songs I have ever heard. One of the best movies I've ever seen. It won't disappoint you.
