Purely Joyful Movie!

As Good As It Gets

Dirtylogy

It's funny, it's tense, it features two great performances from two actors and the director expertly creates a web of odd tension where you actually don't know what is happening for the majority of the run time.

The movie is funny, especially if you're single and struggle regularly with the strange holiday dating fever that starts around Halloween and ends just around Valentine's Day. "I Hate Valentine's Day" is all about mixed signals and how we spoil things by trying too hard -- or trying NOT to try to hard. There's a fine balance between right and wrong (or what works and what doesn't) in the dating world and Nia Vardalos nails it in this movie. Basically, watching the various couples "find" each other the viewer comes to the realization that we're ALL crazy and just need to find someone who's level of crazy is a good fit with our own.I wasn't a fan of Corbett's BFF in this movie. Too MCP, over the top, and didn't add anything to the film by being in it. Otherwise a great movie.

One thing that I've noticed about a lot of comedies lately is a lack of comic energy. This movie has a nice energy, but unfortunately, it's not well written enough to back that up. The performances are okay--Nia Vardalos is a little too perky, and John Corbett pretty much plays the same character over and over again, so he's pretty good in this (he's had practice).Basically, the formula for a classic romantic comedy is: Good energy/pacing + impeccable performances + amazing writing. This movie doesn't really have the latter two, so it was doomed from the get-go--at best it will find a good run on Lifetime.Sorry.

My only hesitations about writing a review is first, I watched it, and second, I did not have a zero stars choice.Based on the Supreme Court definition, this movie is pornography, i.e., totally without redeeming social value. On the other hand, I should move to Brazil because someone gave it four stars. What is in the water there?Who is Nia Vardalos? She "starred" in, wrote and either she is a gillionaire who financed this movie, or has a very rich husband/lover who put up the money, or has friends whom everyone should have. The movie is totally inane. On the other hand, presumably, it provided employment for a whole bunch of people in a time of economic need. So I guess I can justify one star after all.

Only two things are missing in this movie to make it great. A director and a script. Since Nia Vardalos was involved in both she probably needs to stick to Greek Weddings. It's not that as a guy, I don't like romantic comedy's. I do. But as a film it was not only predictable, but repetitive. How many "walking dialog" scenes can a movie have?Characters had no continuity. Characters weren't established very well. The script rambled.I wish I could find some positive attributes for this movie, but I'd have to lie. Sorry...
