A great movie, one of the best of this year. There was a bit of confusion at one point in the plot, but nothing serious.

Is it possible to appreciate a movie and not like it at all? I learned long ago in film school how much it hurts to receive criticism on a project you've poured your heart into, so I'll try to keep my review mostly positive.The acting in In Her Shoes is fantastic. Toni Collette personifies the role, so much so that you can't even imagine anyone else being cast as Rose. She's a hard worker, a realist, a secret believer in love, and struggles between self-loathing and enjoying the good when it comes. Above all, she's the "good kid", the responsible one in comparison to her flighty, stupid, floozy sister Maggie. I'm not trying to be mean by calling her stupid; she contains neither book smarts nor common sense. Cameron Diaz tries to shed her American golden girl image by portraying an incredibly unlikable villain, and it works. Part of the reason I don't like Cameron Diaz is because I can't shake this movie's performance from my mind. Shirley MacLaine plays the girls' estranged grandmother, and she gives a surprisingly warm and feminine performance.My problem with the movie is the message of the story. The two sisters continually clash until Cameron Diaz does the unforgivable and Toni Collette kicks her out, leaving her to flounder on her own. I won't give any spoilers, but at the heart of the story is a "family is family" theme. I don't subscribe to that theory. I don't think being blood related to someone gives them the right to trample all over your life with the assurance of unconditional love and forgiveness. The entire duration of the movie, I side with Toni. I have no sympathy for Cameron, even when she's tossed out on her fanny. Since I'm not on board with the entire point of the movie, it's hard for me to enjoy watching it.My favorite part of the movie is Mark Feuerstein's EWF character. He's ridiculously cute, totally Every Woman's Fantasy. So whenever I'm forced to watch In Her Shoes with my mom, at least there's eye candy to pass the time! Kiddy Warning: Obviously, you have control over your own children. However, due to graphic sex scenes, and some adult themes, I wouldn't let my kids watch it. Also, there may or may not be a rape scene, so keep that in mind.

This film tells the story of two sisters, one of them has the brains and the other has the looks. Though they are very close, their relationship is severely tested by an indiscretion.You can tell this film is all about Cameron Diaz, as the camera focuses on her various body parts on many occasions. Fortunately, Toni Collette provides a great non superficial contrast to save the film from being too shallow. The story is about family relationships, and it focuses on a bit too many relationships, making it unfocused. I thought it was dragging on a bit, but the version I watched was already a cut version that was ten minutes shorter. I still enjoyed it, especially how Toni Collette finally finds herself and her love. The retirement facility is a good subplot too. I did say the film is a bit too long, but if they could expand just a little on the grandson of the professor, and maybe make him more prominent in the film after he gets introduced, it would have been a great Hollywood ending.

Rose Fellow (Toni Collette) is a hard working straight laced lawyer. Her sister Maggie (Cameron Diaz) is a hot drunken mess who can't keep a job. They have a massive fight after Maggie sleeps with Rose's boyfriend. Maggie becomes homeless and starts living with a grandmother (Shirley MacLaine) neither knew. Meanwhile Rose quits her job and starts a dog walking business.This movie is too unnecessarily slow. Toni Collette is great and Cameron Diaz is interesting. They have a great scene together. But the great scenes in this movie are separated by too much filler. Cameron Diaz could be darker. The drama simmers along for far too long. The sisters are great together but the movie's not as explosive separated. The long middle is held back as we wait for the inevitable reunion.

In Her Shoes starts with, as many romantic comedy do, a quick love and a quick hurt to set the stage. However, this is not really about romance though it does contain some. It's about what it means to be connected, and what it entails. It's also about setting yourself free, and finding your path.We all, at some point, hit rock bottom, it helps us understand who we are, and in this movie, the main characters do just that.The story is well built, interesting, it doesn't follow too many of the usual path, and has enough novel ideas that it makes for a very solid scenario. The dialogs are real, interesting, and often enough funny. There's no downtime, there's always one more thing you want to know, and it ends on a very positive note that anybody can choose reflect upon.Cameron Diaz introduce her hot manipulative character with a bang, and slowly pulls us in to force us to get to know her better as she does herself. Toni Colette plays her usual self- effacing persona, while Shirley Maclaine hits her role as the grand-mother spot on.You'll easily be engrossed, see it.
