Plot-- Aliens establish an underground beachhead that only a little boy witnesses. Trouble is nobody will believe his fantastic story; that is, until Mom and Dad start acting like robots.Good thing Earth had Morris Ankrum to save us from all those 1950's aliens. Here he does it again, thank goodness. Yeah, I'm another one of those front-row kids turned beer-guzzling geezer who shuddered then (1953) and still do at this first-rate sci-fi. Thanks a lot production-designer Menzies; you got a lot of bang for your buck. It's his artistic eye that lifts so many of the complex visuals to a compelling level. Thanks too, to whoever provided the army footage that lends realism to the fight-back. In my little book, this is near adult level sci-fi, with echoes of Body Snatchers (1956). Sure, things turn a little hokey once the giant Mutants and the octopus-bottle-head enter the picture. But that first part is a paranoid grabber when nobody believes poor little David. Then again, what kid could blossom with that great ice queen Hillary Brooke as mom. She was so good at off-putting parts. And I hope young Jimmy Hunt got adult-level pay for his expert turn. No wonder the role trailed him into adulthood (IMDB). And shouldn't overlook what amounts to a great 1950's supporting cast, including such familiar stalwarts as Sande, Stone, Freed, Kennedy, among others. All in all and despite the catch-penny title, Invaders shouldn't be confused with Roger Corman's drive-in camp classics. The latter have their own virtues mainly as laugh-fests rather than fright-fests. But either kind is better than those 1950's big-budget bore-fests with Richard and Elizabeth.

Acceptable , estimable and well-made science-fiction/suspense/thriller in which a kid and military are confronted by an alien invasion . This film , nowadays , has achieved cult stature and with the passing of the years has attained rave reviews . A boy named David MacLean (Jimmy Hunt) tries to stop aliens that came from above and attack from below . As the aliens have taken over his town and are attempting to brainwash its inhabitants . As his parents (Hilary Brooke , Leif Erickson) are zapped by the weird and diabolic creatures . He can't convince the townspeople of this invasion because they've already possessed by the outer beings . As the people fall into a sandpit where martian slaves carry on their fiendish work guided by a malicious mastermind . As David is only helped by Dr. Stuart Kelston (Arthur Franz , also narrator) and the sympathetic Dr. Pat Blake (Helena Carter) . Later on , the boy enlists the aid of Col. Fielding (Morris Ankrum) and his U.S. Marines . The soldiers go under the surface where the Marines encounter extraterrestrials in the tunnels , leading to the powerful alien leader .The earlier first version loosely based on a story by John Battle results to be a potent lesson how to direct a film in low budget and it holds a subtle but efficient intrigue . Gradual as well as notable built-up suspense is quite superb as when the aliens are shown largely at the ending and to create a real menace . This exciting film packs chills , thrills , guessing , paranoia , absence of all characterization and spectacular FX by that time , though today dated . In fact , the sandpit opening and closing was done by cutting a long slit in a piece of heavy canvas and inserting a large funnel . And including stock footage , as it shows tanks being loaded onto train flatcars that were actually WW2 M10 tank destroyers and by the time of this film were superseded by newer models . Chilling tale of an alien invasion , this is a nice thriller/SciFi in its own right , dealing with a saucer descends on earth and takes over human beings when they fall into a sandpit . The story is told from the view point of a kid , including a surprising and unexpected finale . Several actors performed the slaves , working in shifts , which meant each performer who did the "walking" for a Martian needed his own custom-made footwear . It is one of the best of the Cold War allegories and a lot of filmmakers cited the movie as a key , influential film in their lives . Colorful cinematography by John Seitz in garish Cinecolor that gives the movie a distinctive , almost muddy look appropriate in particular to the strange underground atmosphere . This motion picture (1953) was well directed by William Cameron Menzies who shows real skill in the way that everyday things are made to carry a sense of menace . Cameron was one of the best production designers of film history and directed a few movies , such as : ¨The Maze¨ , ¨The Whip Hand¨ , ¨Drums in the Deep South¨ ,¨The Green Cockatoo¨ , ¨Thief of Bagdad¨ , and another classic Sci-Fi : ¨Things to come¨ . In ¨Invaders from Mars¨ Menzies provides a punchy suspenseful Sci-Fi in green-and-gold color about some unwelcome aliens . Although it aroused no great attention in its day and despite its commercial and critical failure , it has become a cult classic . This oddball vintage 50s SF tale is remade 33 years later with similar plot , as a Martian invasion perceived only by one young boy , being directed by Tobe Hooper again with Jimmy Hunt , who played young David MacLean in the original and the police chief in this remake , and Hunter Carson who is the real life son of Karen Black who plays a hysterical school nurse , Timothy Bottoms , Laraine Newman , James Karen , Bud Cort , Louise Fletcher , Eric Pierpoint . This second high-tech outing pays homage to the first retelling but being really inferior to precedent .

***SPOILERS*** It's little David MacLean, Jimmy Hunt, who discovers with his high powered telescope that the Earth is being invaded by Men from Mars in practically his own back yard. That's when he spots a flying saucer land and borrow it's way underground not far from his home. At first not believed by his dad aeronautical engineer George MacLean, Leif Ericson, by him checking the landing site he himself disappears and later shows up at home acting as if he's been lobotomized! Soon a number of people in the area including David's mom Mary MacLean, Hillary Brooke, end up the same way like her now zombie like husband totally detached from reality as well as the human race.As the shocking truth comes to the surface it's a spaceship full of Martians lead by their leader, the guy with his head in a fishbowl, played by Luce Potter are planning to prevent the construction of a space ship that George MacLean is working on to be complete! They don't want anyone being able to travel to Mars like they can travel to the Earth and mess up their ecological system. It's the US Army that is summoned to stop the Martians before they can do any more damage. With Col. Fielding played by the "Eternal Colonel" himself Morris Ankum in charge to stop this invasion from Mars he unloads all the firepower he has at his disposal at the Martians who's underground hideout easily withstands. Taking the fight to the Martians to their own tuft in the underground hideout that they, with laser technology, made for themselves seems to backfire by Col. Feilding and his men not realizing how dangerous and unstable the Martians' laser ray machine is in the wrong hands: themselves! And with that Col. Fielding has set off a number of events that may well end up killing everyone within a 10 mile radius! ***SPOILERS*** There is a happy ending here but not one you would expect. Little David and his parents together with all the people in the movie who've been turned into brain numbed zombies are back to normal again but were not that sure that they'll stay that way. Like a repeating nightmare it, the movie, seems to go on forever but only for David who's the only one in the cast that's fully conscious of it!

Jimmy Hunt plays David MacLean, a young boy who wakes up to see a spaceship land in a nearby sand pit. His father goes to investigate, but returns completely changed, with an unpleasant personality. Others who go investigate return the same way. Turns out they are being taken over by aliens from mars who are determined to conquer Earth, person by person...Though held in high regard for its nostalgia value, by any objective standard this a turgid mess, with silly looking aliens that are an embarrassment to Science Fiction. Some good cinematography can't save it.
