brilliant actors, brilliant editing
A brilliant film that helped define a genre
It's a mild crowd pleaser for people who are exhausted by blockbusters.
View MoreIt's easily one of the freshest, sharpest and most enjoyable films of this year.
View MoreSo much has already been written here about this film, in fact, there's nothing new to add for me, yet I'm compelled to write about it. This in itself proves what kind of film this is. You just need to talk about this film...with everyone. What's to like? The music, the direction, the freshness of the characters, the cinematography, the fact that there are no aging Khans & the fact that most of the script is repeated by us while amongst our friends which makes it easy to relate with the characters. What's not to like? Nothing...What could have been better? The acting, but then let's not forget that most of the actors in it as new comers. So it's excusable. If you haven't yet watched the movie stop reading this and get going.
View MoreWell, we now have a new Khan kid on the block. For Imran Khan who made a significant departure from the muscled and dancing boys making macho entries these days, this romantic flick seemed tailor made for him. This surely has an uncanny resemble to his Uncle Aamir’s strategy where he went around with the ‘chocolate hero’ image till he established himself in serious roles. But, was the movie really so worthwhile?Jaane Tu is about complementary personalities Jai (Imran) and Aditi (Genelia) who share an inseparable bond which they believe is nothing more than friendship. Their group of friends Rotlu, Jignesh a.k.a. Jiggy, Sandhya a.k.a. Bombs and Shaleen know for sure that the lead duo are in love, so do Aditi’s parents and Jai’s mother. Bugged by constant prodding of others, the duo decides to look for an ideal partner each other. With the college getting over, and the pappu dance song through, the friends seem to be having a nice time going places. At on such club, Jai saves Meghana (Manjari Phadnis) from being stalked and cupid strikes them. As Jai gets closer to Meghana, Aditi feels left out. As time passes, Aditi gets engaged to a family friend, a macho man she always wanted, who was unlike the mild mannered Jai who always opts to be non-violent.With the passage of events, Aditi senses a mismatch with mean ways of Sushant and realizes that she actually loves Jai. Aditi’s weird artistic brother Amit (Prateek Babbar) too pitches for Jai. Unfortunately the realization comes late for Jai, only after realizing that Meghana’s sweet ways; her penchant for seeing the world goody-goody and her hyper-imaginative ‘what’s this?’ game is actually defense for her personal melodrama. What follows next is typical Bollywood drama. A simple story here gets adulterated by being set in a not so well scripted storytelling between friends at the Airport, a climax that downright brainless. The funny sequences involving three challenges of Rathods and Sohail-Arbaaz Khan stuff sucks. The short role of Naseeruddin Shah talking through a picture entertains though. Paresh Rawal, in his poorly scripted role is wasted. If not for these bloopers that prevent this from becoming an all time memorable flick, it still scores points for being a cute, fresh film. While Imran is not just handsome but did a good job, lively Genelia is refreshing. Ratna Pathak Shah, of small screen fame did a good job as Jai’s mother. Rehman’s music is decent, but nothing new. To sum up, like uncle, like nephew, this is Imran’s ‘papa-kehte-hain’ style entry. Way to go Imran!
View MoreEvery film associated with Aamir Khan has got his incomparable influence and JTYJA has also got the same despite of the fact that it's been directed by Abbas Tyrewala. The movie is fresh like a morning breeze though it has an old plot of "just friends and not lovers".No doubt, the brilliant music by A. R. Rahman is the first reason why you get attracted towards it, but after you have seen the movie, it's the acting of the young brigade which stays in your mind. The director has given full freedom to the actors and everyone is chilled out in the movie with no signs of stress or expectations to be fulfilled. The main points why the film works is its fresh outlook, new energetic & cool faces and above all the freak out language used in the script with carefree "Tu", "Tera" in the dialogues. It just takes you away from the formal "Aap" attitude and makes you feel more light. The story is not new and the narration is also quite similar to movies like "Chalte Chalte" (Shahrukh Rani) where the friends are talking about the lead couple's affair & marriage. But it's the innocence of the new actors which works. The credit goes to the youth and young treatment in the movie. However there are certain scenes in which you feel the invisible presence of Aamir's special treatment somewhere at the back.In the acting arena, top marks go to Genelia Dsouza for her excellent act of a girl who doesn't know that she is in love. She is what you remember walking out the cinema hall. And second comes the debutant, Imran Khan, who has acted just as he is simply not worried about the fact that it's his launch pad. And for that he surely deserves praise. In the competitive world where every star son wants to outshine another, Imran shows that he damn cares about this competition and just wants to enjoy his work. The seniors in the movie, Ratna Pathak Shah & Naseer are enjoying their roles which is nice to see. And a very entertaining act is there by the brothers Arbaaz & Sohail in their unique comic style. Paresh Rawal looked like repeating himself from another film. Rest all were quite natural and enjoyable.Music by the maestro A.R. Rahman no doubt is outstanding with "Aditi" song standing at the top. Fresh voices surely have added more flavour to the movie. But I found the lyrics department rather weak. Apart from the "Aditi" track, rest could have been more expressive in content. In few words, the movie is fresh, has a young feel and above all makes you feel lighter in the world of heavy burdens. That's what makes it work.
View Morei might be held accused for digging too much into a movie whose sole purpose is to make the viewer 'feel good', but shouldn't feel good movies have some logic? the movie is about two lovers, jai & aditi and their 4 friends. lets start with these friends of theirs.DO THEY HAVE LIVES OF THEIR OWN? throughout the movie, it seems like their lives start, stop & revolve around jai & aditi, & the funniest part is both jai & aditi don't give a s**t about them. initially, jai & aditi are too involved with each other to care about them, then jai-aditi-(what's this?-girl) are too involved in their crap to notice about them. now, this friend group has 2 boys, one of them is not bad-looking,but he is given such bad hair styling and such bad clothes compared to jai that he looks like a clown throughout the movie.the other guy is balding, and given even worse clothes.out of 2 girls, one is shown to have below average IQ, the other is shown as such a witty girl, one begins to wonder what is she doing with them? as a whole, the director made them look like a bunch of biggest losers on the planet,so that we can focus solely on jai & aditi.the balding guy & the stupid girl have feelings for aditi & jai.they fall for each other, because they envy jai-aditi's love for each other.and at this point, the viewers are told that jai & aditi don't think they love each other(even though the whole universe knows that they do).they suddenly become too dumb to understand this most obvious thing.after this, starts the silliest of melodrama.i could not connect with any of the characters because i really don't think such characters exist in real life.but what i think doesn't matter because movie is a hit & amir, the producer has made a point.at one point in the movie, amir makes jai's mother say that Indian filmmakers(excluding amir,of course) make silly movies & Indian cinema needs intelligent movies.so when jai goes out to watch a movie, he watches a 'james bond' movie instead of an Indian movie. i totally agree with you amir, except that i don't think you have made any intelligent movie either.
