Highly Overrated But Still Good
I am only giving this movie a 1 for the great cast, though I can't imagine what any of them were thinking. This movie was horrible
View MoreI love Bollywood films. Ravishing, well-invested musicals, song and dance, dialogues which are larger than life, wonderful actors, strong characters. The song numbers have been an artistic tradition Hindi films, and what particularly amazes me about all these films is the complete irrelevance of the song numbers to the film's story itself (unless it's a film like Dil To Pagal Hai, where the music is part of the script).I think Jhoom Barabar Jhoom is a brave attempt to make a film with the songs being part of the screenplay. But even then, it just doesn't work. Why? Because there is NO screenplay. The entire film is a big dance show. And it shouldn't be like this. When there are no songs, the film consists of silly jokes and plastic "acting". Some sequences are so ridiculous that you start hating anyone who's been ever involved with this film. It is intended to be funny and crazy, which is a good purpose, but this film manages to be neither this nor that and instead, it sadly ends up being a big silly show. I do admit that the songs are well danced and catchy, but they become tiresome at some point, mainly because most of them are actually the same song in different versions. The acting (not that it can be called acting in this case) is bad. Abhishek is annoying and miscast. Pretentious performance. Preity, an actress I like immensely, is her usual bubbly and vivacious self, but here, somehow lifeless. The fact that a great actress like Preity could even think of appearing in this film makes me want to slap her. Bobby and Lara are terrible. They ham, overact, and even in the dance numbers get overshadowed by the leading stars (at least here they make some sense). Lara is particularly horrible as a prostitute with her fake French accent. All in all, I do recommend to watch it if you intend to go and dance through the entire film. Quite a special watch buhaaaa...
View MoreYash Raj has not had much luck at the box office of late, in 2007 they produced 4 movies and only one became a huge sensation and that was Chak De India and the three other that bombed were Tara Rum Pum, Laaga Chunari mein daag and Aaja Nacle. In my personal opinion I think that the box office was rather unfair to Aaja Nacle and Jhoom Barabar Jhoom. It's one of those movies that I didn't expect to enjoy but my parents were watching so I watched it with them and was pleasantly surprised. JBJ may not be a masterpiece by any means but from an entertainment point of view it is pretty good. Not every movie is made to become a masterpiece, some movies are just made to provide entertainment which JBJ provides. The story was good but what really saves the movie is the wonderful songs, my favourite being the title track. The director Shaad Ali made full use of the Abhishek Bachan-Bobby Deol pairing, the part where they are both in the motorcycle and the tune to yeh dosti playing in the background(Amitabh Bachan and Dharmendra were both in Sholay)is a very good touch. In my opinion JBJ deserved a better fate at the box office, certainly a better fate than the over-hyped and disappointing Dhoom 2 which was a mega blockbuster but I disliked intensely. JBJ provides decent timepass entertainment and is certainly a lot better than most of the movie produced nowadays.
View MoreBy far, the worst film i've seen all year. The less said about this one the better. The storyline was interesting in concept but executed terribly. On top of that, the movie was mind-numbingly boring. The main characters are both shallow and illog...(read more) ical...words cannot describe how random and boring the background stories that occupy the first half of the film are. The whole Ticket To Hollywood sequence in Abhi's story was both pointless (ticket to Hollywood?) and crude (the Princess Diana bit). Preity Zinta's story was even more absurd (the whole superhero aspect) and insulting (india vs Pakistan, Indian's skin color). Overall, ridiculous and pointless can describe the majority of Jhoom's plot. Ditto for the 'dance off' sequence that occupies most of the second half. By the time the so called 'twist' shows up...the audience cannot sympathize with the characters since their is no reason given for their feelings...their really is no plot development to speak of...this movie just goes nowhere. The only reason to see this is for its beautifully staged songs. But even those get annoying...seeing Amitabh Bachchan (in a pointless cameo) and company repeat the title song 6 times throughout the movie is enough too drive a person insane. While the film is told in a very unconventional fantasy musical type style...it cant pull it off. Unlike last years wonderful Jaan-E-Mann...Yash Raj didn't even try. The script and direction is absolutely abysmal. As far as acting...Abhishek was very annoying, and Preity Zinta sleepwalked through her role. On the other hand, Lara/Bobby gave credible performances as Abhi and Preity's love interests and lended some life to the film. They showed both sides of their characters excellently...along with some of the songs and cinematography, they were the saving grace of the movie. Overall, as of all Yash Raj productions of late...this film is all gloss no substance. Avoid.
View MoreI feel that the characters in this so-called movie were awfully atrocious. They had a really bad storyline and everyone, even a baby, could have thought of the plot. Please don't see it. I would think that after Bobby Deol's good performances in other movies, he would definitely not choose this kind of movies. I expected way more from Preity Zinta and Abishek Bachchan. My admiration for Preity Zinta has gone from 100 % to 50 %. There was a very bad thing that I noticed in this movie. Were they so unoriginal that they had to get an important part of the movie from a newspaper? This isn't a spoiler since I'm not telling you any important details from this kind of movie that no-one should watch anyway.
