I wanted to like it more than I actually did... But much of the humor totally escaped me and I walked out only mildly impressed.

This a very easy to watch and enjoyable comedy film with a good cast. Sadly Emilia Fox only played a very small part in it. Set in a small village, the vicar and his wife hires a nanny who turns out to be not quite what they expected, and has some very funny moments. Kristin Scott Thomas acted her part brilliantly, she looked so natural and deserves and award for her part. The couple have a young son being bullied at school and a nymphomaniac daughter. Rowan Atkinson appearing in a film means that it must be a comedy and he never let us down, although the film did have a dark side to it with unexpected ending. A good family film,

What can I say about this film other than it is funny, witty, surprising, original and well performed. Maggie Smith is superb of course in this unusual role, as is Rowan Atkinson with his perfect comedic timing but I think that Kristen Scott Thomas was comedy gold as the wayward, bored housewife, Gloria, who's husband (the local vicar - Atkinson) had lost his way a little bit. Patrick Swayze was an amusing and odd casting choice as brash American Lothario golf pro who seduces Gloria but whilst he is something to distract her from the unfulfilled life of a country vicar's wife, she soon realises he's not all he's cracked up to be. Swayze is funny and doesn't take himself at all seriously and it's a brave man who will wear a thong like that on screen! All round entertaining, with heart and tenderness too... if you overlook the grisly bits. The family, the Vicar, Gloria, the daughter Holly and the young son, Petey, are dysfunctional, at each other's throats, unaware of each other's needs and generally not doing well until the new housekeeper joins their family and things start to improve - but all is not what it seems. Brilliantly simple, well scripted and for once a comedy not mocking of the church. Not seen Song of Solomon (Song of Songs) used in that fashion in a film before! Rather clever.

The story about this movie is simple. Goodfellow family hires nanny to watch over because they have work of their head even if that is not the fact, actually.Well, I am going to start with beginning. I think that the opening scene makes the rest of the movie a little predictable. You know that girl is going to have some connection with a family from small village. It was funny, but unnecessary.I have to say that everything in the movie happened too fast. Gloria fell in love with her instructor too fast, and her daughter Holly was stated as a slut, which is too far-in-credibility for this movie. I found Rowan Attkinson in this movie a little bit lost and his character wasn't that funny like Gloria and Lance, her lover. When we find out that Grace is actually a killer, it's funny because she doesn't even see any piece of severity in her acts. She just tries to keep family happy and together. Reason is very good twist. She is Gloria's mother. She is overall the most memorable character in this movie and easily likable, besides the fact that she killed more people in this movie than Jason in Friday the 13th Part II.Petey is the most undeveloped character and it's there just because of the routine which movie has to accomplish. But his situations developed Graces's character so it's needed.Overall: Movie has really funny moments that involved mostly, like I stated, Gloria, Lance and Walter. It's a family movie set in beautiful country-side, which is perfectly settled with emotions of all characters. Of course I can't forget to mention Liz Smiths's character which was the final piece of this puzzle. My rating: 7/10

With the average ratings this movie has, I expected little, but I found it delivering, and doing so very well. The family is really awkward to watch in the beginning, it is so totally dysfunctional, but its rebirth is convincing and moves us closer to the people - in most cases.I found the opening sequence particularly well done, where Rosie is presented with few words, more with gestures and pose, and what we see is a charming young woman with a dark secret in her trunk, and a strange attitude to it.Then this woman arrives to the dysfunctional family and saves it, in the most morbid way. The moral is hard to accept, which makes it good: Should the family just accept God's mysterious ways and take the good they get, despite knowing that much evil was done to give it to them. The weakest part of the movie is, in my opinion, the son. He is flat and simple, and the "solution" to his problems is also simplified. We never hear anyone trying to explain why four boys got their brakes sabotaged. He is never accused of it, and four boys were hurt, possibly rather badly. But that is a detail in the whole. Well shot, well played, mostly well written. It all sums up to a movie that grows increasingly beautiful, I moved from uncomfortable to entertained. It may not be for everybody, it is not a straight comedy but rather a morbid drama that will make us worried and insecure as much as laugh. You don't get Mr Bean-style slapstick from Atkinson (although I like that just as much) but much, much more subtle humor, which can be just as funny if you only notice them.
