Very well executed

Dartherer

I really don't get the hype.

Orla Zuniga

It is interesting even when nothing much happens, which is for most of its 3-hour running time. Read full review

what a terribly boring film. I'm sorry but this is absolutely not deserving of best picture and will be forgotten quickly. Entertaining and engaging cinema? No. Nothing performances with flat faces and mistaking silence for subtlety.

(With apologies to Camper Van Beethoven.) I can't recall having seen a movie made beyond the 1950's showing teenagers bowling. All we needed was James Dean mooing in the auditorium....I'd say overall I enjoyed this more than, say, a root-canal operation, but I admit I was a little confused at the end with all those killers with hooks popping up, including whoever was in the cop car at the end (which I would put down to the "requirement" that horror movies have some kind of shock ending or twist ending, which probably goes back to "Carrie" with the hand coming out of the grave at the end). Also they gave away one of the "bad guys" early with some capital-F foreshadowing---remembering the scene showing Dr Jack looking at the hook which was right in front of the camera—I thought "Hmmmm, wonder what THIS is supposed to signify…" It seemed unlikely that someone would have survived that huge fireball that engulfed the house. (But that's another horror movie staple---killers who are harder to kill than Rasputin.) But I liked that not all the adults in the movie were buffoons and not all the teenagers were jerks; when kids and parents said "I love you" to each other, I believed it. There were some humorous bits, like when the one kid gets caught masturbating---trust me, every male person has had that phobia. I liked that the various murders were believable in context, nothing too overwrought. The acting was also believable, except too bad the female principal came off so stiffly. (According to IMDb, that actress was only ever in two movies---not surprising.) The Washington State scenery was nice (before everything started getting filmed in Canada). So if you are able to see it for free and have plenty of beer available, sure, go for it, feel free to take it as a spoof; at least it's not constantly proclaiming how clever it is, unlike "Scream" et al....

In Lovers Lane, a seemingly-couple, Harriet Anderson (Erin J. Dean) and Ward Lamson (Brian Allemand) has been found dead. Despite they find the killer, Ray Hennessey (Ed Bailey) which they call as THE HOOK, but the sorrow has been coated their husband and wife and their child as well. A few years ago, Harriet's daughter, Mandy (also played by Erin J. Dean) is in her high school age, but the memory remains a misery both for her and her father, the town sheriff, Tom Anderson (Matt Riedy). As a geeky girl, she's a cousin of bitchy popular girl, Chloe Grefe (Sarah Lancaster), daughter of her step uncle, Jack Grefe (Richard Sanders), the town psychiatrist. Chloe is dating the school prince charming, Michael Lamson (Riley Smith), son of the school's principle, Penny Lamson (Suzanne Bouchard). Their friend consist consist of Michael's best friend Brad (Ben Indra), sex-frenzy couple Tim (Collin F. Peacock) and Kathy (Megan Hunt), the new cheerleader in town Janelle (Anna Faris) and Doug (Billy O'Sullivan), an overweight boy in a spoiling way. Now, the valentine's day is coming. The relationship of Chloe and Michael seem can't get any longer and things are getting worse as she plan a valentine's party of her own by giving Michael some lesson by flirting Brad aggressively. And if it not enough, she's ready to make a whole lot of fun by make a surprise through all her friend and that's including Mandy.Meanwhile, Ray Hennessey a.k.a. The Hook is escape from the asylum. Dr. Grefe, whose responsible for him is fell so upset about it. He concerning about the safety the town's teen, especially his daughter and his brother's daughter. But everything goes madly berserk, as the killer strike over the town and start the bloody mayhem. Now, the question is, are this has something to do with what happened 12 years ago? Well, it seem its Mandy's burden now to solve the mystery or dead becomes her. Being so cheesy and taking inspired by many other slasher movies, Lovers Lane still managed as fine entertainer, at least to fill your bore times with a lot of laugh. If truth to be told, Lovers Lane is the most underrated after many direct-to-video-posh-Scream slasher movie, but it still shine because of the cliché it has. A slightly direct-to-video slasher. This underrated flick is somewhat has many similarity with Cherry Falls, which is objecting teen with their obsession of love and (off course) sex. As a movie, despite Cherry Falls are better, they are in the same league, where's there is no explicit gores (most of the kills are off-screen), no intense fright, non atmospherically, the pace is slow, alas fails miserably as a great slasher package, but at least still fun to watch. One thing to bother is the taking more popular slasher as it blatant copy is so annoying, when it seem lack of originality. The director is so inspiring, when the script actually is witty enough. He should learn more how to make a slasher as he must learn about the genre more than he should know. This is insulting. Most of the actors are portraying they character respectfully, especially for B-Movie standard. Lovers Lane also featuring the pre-Scary Movie, Anna Faris with his blonde hair. Her appearance unquestionably fun.Well, as little twist, Lovers Lane is still worth watching, but just don't expect it as a winner, because little is a literally concept for this movie. As my final bashed, Lovers Lane may fail as a slasher, but succeed as laughable movie.2/10

LOVERS LANE is truly the ultimate "B-movie double" film, though, as a horror film, it truly fails (blame production values). Okay, let's first round up the "B-movie doubles" in the film: Erin J. Dean, who plays the heroine, mousy Mandy Anderson (daughter of the sheriff), is Rachael Leigh Cook; Riley Smith, the hero, popular Michael Lamson (son of the high school principal), is James Van Der Beek; high school principal Penny Lamson (Suzanne Bouchard) is Barbara Hershey; Sheriff Anderson (Matt Riedy) looks like an older version of DREW CAREY'S Ryan Stiles, but veteran character actor Fred Ward would have made a perfect Sheriff Anderson; Dr. Jack Grefe (Richard Sanders), a psychiatrist at the state institute who is also the sheriff's half-brother (hardly ever developed), is a dead ringer for the actor who played Les Nessman in WKRP IN CINCINNATI (oh wait, it's the same actor); Michael's pal Brad (Ben Indra) is a dead ringer for CRIMSON TIDE's Danny Nucci (okay, yeah, he was also the best friend in TITANIC); and bitchy Chloe Grefe (Sarah Lancaster of SAVED BY THE BELL: THE NEW CLASS), Michael's girlfriend and the daughter of Dr. Jack Grefe (making her Mandy's cousin, something that is never fully developed), is any vampy blonde in any teen flick of the last half-century (if you had to pick one, let's say Sarah Michelle Gellar in CRUEL INTENTIONS).Rounding out the cast are: Doug, the horny loser (Billy O'Sullivan), cheerleader and new-girl-in-town Jannelle (Anna Faris of SCARY MOVIE and its sequel, AND THE ONLY REASON to watch this film, especially because she shows off her natural blonde hair and yet seems intelligent), and couple Tim (Collin F. Peacock) and Cathy (Megan Victoria Hunt), who can't keep their hands off each other.Good things: the camera work looks promising, and the pace is so-so. The story, however, is never fully developed, and the killer with the hook for a hand lacks a personality. The scrawling of "Prison food sucks" in blood found after the killer escapes from the institute (an ode to HALLOWEEN but without the suspense of the actual escape) raises a big question mark. Why did the killer brutally murder a young couple (apparently locked in an extramarital affair) on Lovers Lane thirteen years before? Although the movie has a twist ending (which is pretty confusing), this question seems rhetorical to the fact. There are only three really good, terrifying scenes, all of which involve the murder of one of the aforementioned teens: one of them, incapacitated on a kitchen table with a broken leg, is tortured by the killer with knives (and the hook, eventually); another one sits terrified on a bed, until the killer makes a surprise appearance from (where else?) underneath the bed; and, lastly, another teen meets a grisly end next to a car window.Bad acting: none really; it's expected of a B-movie anyway. The sheriff, in the opening scene, seems like he was the worst actor in his community theater, but does an okay job for the rest of the movie. The other actors, especially Dean and Faris, are really good (playing a teenager isn't that hard), but only if you can hear them (the boom mike must've been bought secondhand or something). Overall, the film was bad. This is a horror film where the high school principal punches a drunken female student in a bowling alley, where the sheriff meets his daughter in town but doesn't seem truly concerned that a violent killer has escaped from the state institute and is headed their way, where a dimwitted deputy reholsters his weapon BEFORE examining what's behind a curtain, where it is said, in the opening scene, that the sheriff and Dr. Grefe are half-brothers, yet that fact, CRUCIAL to the storyline, is hardly ever developed! And yes, not one, not two, but THREE scenes involve animals creating suspense! (Does the dog's head count as an entire animal?)The worst, however, is the resolution following the film's climax/revelation phase. SPOILER: The only surviving teens sit in the back of a police SUV, awaiting a ride home. The killer (!) drives off with them (we know because of the hook). Will there be more? Blame the budget. An alternate ending that clears up the confusing one we have watched and adds a terrifying car chase would have made the film TEN TIMES BETTER! (which doesn't say much)All in all, this film would only be good for those of us who adore SCARY MOVIE's Anna Faris (obviously I am one, since I bought the tape and have written a nearly 800-word review). She is great here (as is nerdy but cute Erin J. Dean), though (and someone else noted this too) she seems to be the only cheerleader in the entire school. 5/10 rating.

I first rented this movie when it was released at Blockbuster back in 1999...I didn't expect much. I knew what the movie was going to be about. This movie almost...ALMOST has a hint of the great atmosphere that 80's slasher movies were notorious for. This ALMOST did! The plot was predictable. The Script was a joke...The acting..well, Riley Smith (michael) is a very talented actor, and is unfortunately stuck in Direct to Video hell....I hope he gets out....Anna Faris (from Scary Movie) is very good in this very weird Jan Brady look alike way....The twist towards the end was dull and not needed....but the end was pretty good...the kids driving off with the killer....Anyway, rent it...I bought for 1.99 that is all it is worth...Check it out though
