This is an extraordinary psychological story that explores the strange way in which guilt turns into anger, a process that is not necessarily straightforward and is therefore beyond the comprehension of just about everyone who hasn't been through a similar experience. Such understanding even tends to be inaccessible for those who have actually been there unless they're very honest and perceptive or very lucky. I am deeply impressed with both the conception and the execution of this film, especially the writing, but all other aspects are beautifully done: the direction, the acting, the music, the cinematography, every element is worthy of the depth of the story. I'm tempted to call it a perfect movie. What else can I say? Here is what else I can say: If you like movies that feature action stars driving orange pickup trucks backwards at ninety miles an hour, this movie is not your cup of tea.

I rated this movie 4 out of ten for the sake of some actors that actually tried to do a good job with this meaningless storytelling disaster. It is incredible, what you can manage in the film industry if you do know "people". I can see a great crew and good actors spent a lot of time for this film and none of them actually seem to know what it is that they are participating. Making your characters talk about important subjects about life and problems of the world does not necessarily make a good movie or even a movie actually! It was like listening to a person trying to talk in a language that they know the vocabulary but do not know anything about grammar. Wow!

This is an interesting movie. The main character Lisa is played by a slightly too old for high school looking Anna Paquin. She is a teenage girl who while distracting a bus driver, witnesses the bus run over a pedestrian. At first she covers for the driver but later changes her mind. She faces a moral dilemma about the accident including guilt and responsibility. But that isn't all there is. Surprising insights into human nature are shown in the supporting characters. Lisa's actress mother and her romance is very real and the relatives of the pedestrian are especially interesting. Despite an A list cast this wasn't a big success because of some production issues that delayed release for years while arguing about the length of the movie. Maybe some scenes could have been cut like the hostile classroom debates.Good supporting cast in minor roles from Mark Ruffalo as the bus driver to Matt Damon and Matthew Broderick as teachers. Alison Janney is memorable as the pedestrian.Good on location filming in the Upper West Side and Lincoln Center and other parts of NYC. Shows some parts of the city that other NYC movies don't usually show. The dialog is realistic and well written even if there are a few over confrontational scenes.Liked the scenes in the Metropolitan Opera which were used to bring out reactions in the characters.Worth the effort.

This could be one of the five worst movies I have seen in the last 10 years. I could have directed a film better than this and I am not in that industry. Here me out. I have watched movies intently for 40+ years. I rarely watch sitcoms, reality TV, nature shows, talk shows, drama series, or even made for TV movies. I just about only watch theatrical movies. This movie is so poorly directed that I was angry I wasted my time. Anna Paquin must have delivered one of the worst performances of a leading lady ever. This woman simply can not act. Even my wife who is not an avid movie fan commented, "Who is this terrible actress?" How someone like this ever made it into the movies is a complete mystery. Please do not waste your life watching this. It is hard to believe that Matthew Broderick, Mark Ruffalo, Matt Damon and Jean Reno were in this. Did they read the script beforehand? I am very fair when I rate a movie and rarely have I seen a movie this poorly scripted. The dialog was horrid! I watched this thing, following scene after scene, expecting some great revelation and then nothing happened. At times there were bizarre sequences of filming which were totally out of place and proceeded no where. My wife and I actually cracked up at this. Did this film have an editor? I will admit there was perhaps 10 minutes of good dialog in the film. It is not like I am an old person who is everything but liberal or not in touch with modernity. I am a part-time abstract artist and very progressive in other ways as well. I have an open mind about everything but know a bad film when I see it. Kenneth Lonergan is not a director to watch in the future. Cross him off the list.
