Load of rubbish!!
Good idea lost in the noise
I knew about this French film when I saw it listed in the 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die book, the title didn't suggest anything particular to me, it was rated highly by critics so I was certainly looking forward to giving it a go, from director Jacques Tati (Mon Oncle, Playtime). Basically it is the summer and many people are taking their holidays, awkward but lovable Monsieur Hulot (Jacques Tati) has decided to take a vacation to the seaside, to the l'Hotel De la Plage resort where they are running holiday-taking classes. Often smoking his smoke and somewhat quiet, but he often gets himself into trouble, causing mishaps and unintentional chaos for other tourists and guests at the resort, and sometimes for himself. Hulot is able to socialise with young blonde Martine (Nathalie Pascaud), but because of class differences, him being much lower, they are not permitted by others to go that far with a relationship, but they ignore these constraints. Also starring Michèle Rolla as The Aunt, Raymond Carl as Waiter, Lucien Frégis as Hotel Proprietor, Valentine Camax as Englishwoman, Louis Perrault as Fred the boatman and André Dubois as Colonel. I will be honest and say that I didn't see much of a story going on, but I know that Tati gave a good performance as the nice guy that is accident prone, I did giggle at the obvious moments, like a paint pot for a boat floating in and out on the waves, and things being made to crash and collapse, so it is a fun and watchable satirical comedy. It was nominated the Oscar for Best Writing, Story and Screenplay. Very good!
View MoreAs I review quite a lot of the films I own or see, the number of times one refers to a character, or style that is Tati-esque, or Tati-like, that I really thought I should remind myself of the great man's possibly greatest and most influential film. This being one of the first 'foreign' dvds I bought, I've seen hundreds, if not thousands of films since and of course, one sees things in different contexts and with new references the more one experiences. So, coming home stressed and feeling a little ill, I got this golden gem out and to let its naive charm soothe and gently amuse me. I wasn't after laugh-a-second hysterics that demanded all of me but something where I could follow Mr Hulot's adventures if I so wished, or otherwise - and it wouldn't matter - one can dip and out of Mr Hulot's Holiday like ones toe in the resort waters, that Tati's comedy figure goes to. Tati's age at this point in his career surprised me slightly - I always got the impression of an older man than he is here.Yes, it's almost certainly true that films and comedy will never be made like this again - and before someone cries 'shame!!' I have to say to the contrary; time, fashions, mood and comedy move on. Show this now to the average family who would supped it up with relish when it was released would now just look at each other, perplexed and I bet that soon, it would be switched off. However, from a film-lover's point of view, we learn to see beyond the surface and be broad-minded enough to see why it worked and how those elements can still touch us. We have our beloved DVDs of Mr Tati and the like and let's appreciate them now, as they were, not as how today's society and audience would.Jacques Tati may not roll off the roll-call of comedy greats as readily as Chaplin, Keaton or Laurel & Hardy, but in many ways, he has been just as influential. So, lap up the best of Tati, here!
View MoreLes Vacances De Monsieur Hulot is the first in one of the most recognizable sagas in French cinema (preceding Mon Oncle, Play Time and Trafic in the Hulot series). The movie follows m. Hulot through sometimes thoughtful, sometimes easy visual jokes while he is on holiday at the beach town of Saint Sévère. The film doesn't really have a plot or a beginning, middle and end, or any major event that catalysts the story or that even moves it forwards. Aside from when Hulot arrives and leaves the town, everything consists of sketches and sketches of unspoken hilariousness.Despite the first traces of the visual genius that Tati would later become and his obvious ability to do meaningful flawless comedy (as with Mon Oncle and Play Time), we here have some sketches that are trying far too hardly to make us laugh (as when Tati dresses a s pirate or plays tennis), but places them intelligently between the best jokes the film has, some of them that still remain as classics (like the old couple picking up seashells or the funeral scene). What we can also notice in this film is the absence of a central idea or anything that Tati tries to tell us here, which for me would be alright in any other normal comedy, but I personally expected more out of Tati, having seen the anti-technologist and anti-modernist pieces Mon Oncle and, especially, Play Time.Les Vacances De Monsieur Hulot is a sketch-based holiday-themed visual comedy with a traditional yet sometimes clever direction, an Oscar nominated funny screenplay and an extremely hilarious soundtrack that consists only of one song played over and over again.Rating: 4/5.
View MoreSeems that I just don't like this movie as much as everyone else seems to do. Don't get me wrong, I was still throughout amused by this movie, it just was not one that really ever made me laugh out loud or entertain constantly, while this was obviously the movie its intentions. The movie tries to be an humorous one in basically literally all of its scene's. Needless to say that not everything in the movie really works out and there are just a few moments that are truly funny. Add to that that the overall movie is quite slowly paced, so its sequences often really take its time to develop and to reach its funny peak. Those moments are often the slapstick ones. You could say that this movie is being a 'modern' slapstick, that features as little dialog as possible. The psychical comedy of the movie can get funny at times, though its not ever anything too surprising or innovative. There is not really a story in it all. It's simply about a beach-side hotel, at which some strange characters stay. Main character is Monsieur Hulot, who everybody for no apparent reason seems to hate. He is being played by director Jacques Tati himself and was a character that got featured in some later Jacques Tati comedies again. I'm still willing to give all those movies a shot though, since I was still quite amused by this whole movie. And I'm a fan of slapstick humor as well, so I'm hoping this all gets featured better in some of the other 'Monsieur Hulot' movies.Thing is that there just isn't much to the story at all. There is no problem or big mystery that needs to be solved. No love story or no evil villainous characters. There is nothing wrong with a movie that doesn't really follow a narrative and is just basically the one comical intended sequences and situation after the other but in this case the movie just doesn't know to benefit from this approach. The movie doesn't even really constantly follow its main character at all. Added to that is it's rather slow pace of story-telling (which French movies are often known for), with as an end result an at times rather slow and lacking comedy.Amusing to watch throughout but just not always that funny and it all gets too slowly paced, by writer, director and actor, Jacques Tati.6/10http://bobafett1138.blogspot.com/
