Good start, but then it gets ruined
While it doesn't offer any answers, it both thrills and makes you think.
View MoreLet me be very fair here, this is not the best movie in my opinion. But, this movie is fun, it has purpose and is very enjoyable to watch.
View MoreGreat example of an old-fashioned, pure-at-heart escapist event movie that doesn't pretend to be anything that it's not and has boat loads of fun being its own ludicrous self.
View MoreI can't not not like this movie! The story is old Hollywood love story musical told in a 21st century setting. This flick has a unique 'look' and 'style' which I personally enjoyed watching. And the plot/story is straight out of the studio days of Hollywood in the 1930's. In my opinion the director pulled it all together and created a highly individualized movie.Yes it is slow at times but the charm keeps your attention and interest. And at the end you feel entertained and that you have seen something that is not your usual mass audience movie.I gave 7 stars because some scenes are just too involved and lengthy - example - when Nate becomes depressed and self destructive - it's a bit overdone.
View MoreThis is an old-fashioned style of movie. It moves slowly and is the type of movie where the underdog wins out and the surprise of talent totally different from their profession comes out. It is not a new idea and is something out of movies I have watched many times but it didn't take away from the movie. The only criticism I have is I felt the characters were not developed enough so you got a better handle on who they were. It was predictable but even though cliché, I enjoyed the movie anyway. It was nice to watch a movie without violence, profanity and nudity.I wasn't quite sure what Nate's job was and I got the idea he was a stock broker or something like that. The offices, even though facades, looked fine. They actually looked like many I have been inside. The average person who has no film making background isn't going to notice how shots look so much. That was fine to me. I was concentrating on the interactions of the characters. As for the singing, jazz isn't my cup of tea really but I do listen to some and the standards were nice. I disagree with others about the character Nate. I felt his voice was very smooth and he sounded much better singing the music than Amy Adams even though she is a favorite of mine but not for her singing. I have a musical background and always felt she has an odd singing voice and is a little whiny sounding. She didn't always hit the notes as well. I figured the two main characters were doing their own singing since I knew Amy Adams did in Enchanted where the music was more suited to her voice but still even there she has sort of a whiny sound when she sings. She is cute and perky and her personality tends to sell the films. I don't think young people would like this movie much and if rating, would give this movie bad reviews most likely. It is not action packed and on top of it, it is a musical that showcases jazz and older styles of pop music. I felt the acting was fine with what they had to work with. Independent movies are usually low budget and I can't see why it would need a higher budget given the storyline. It's not a bad movie but more suited to television I think.
View MoreI'll admit it, I'm a sucker for romantic jazz standards, I'm a sucker for films about aspiring musicians, and I'm a sucker for Amy Adams. So this little film was a gift straight from heaven for me. The acting was quite good, the plot, though a bit out there, was still believable enough to carry the story to its sweet conclusion, and Amy Adams was Amy Adams and that's enough for me to give it nine stars. This plot line is not new, in fact it's as much of a standard as the songs which permeated the script; boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love, boy loses girl, boy gets girl back. If not for the casting, which to my mind was superb, this film could have been a dud. But the lead characters were just understated enough to be lovable and the music was nothing short of divine. No steamy interludes, no weird twists of fate, no ridiculous situations, just a clever little interlude to brighten up your viewing pleasure. Thank you all who brought this little gem to the screen.
View MoreSince then, all the movies featuring Amy Adams were nice, from Enchanted to her two Streep's films (doubt and Julia). And no doubt that she is an attractive actress, quite sweet and above all, healthy. Also, her singing is outstanding. She ought to be successful among the other stars in Hollywood. However, no matter how magnificent she can be, as long as she appears in a movie, she needs a script to interpret. A script with a plot. Sadly, this Moonlight serenade seems to fail without one.Adams' role Chloe is a mysterious girl, sharing some elements with Maeterlinck's Mélisande: from an unknown somewhere, bouncing forth and back between her two lovers, coming and going without any reasons. And Nate, acting at whim. Besides, the plot is pale. I couldn't help myself from being distracted now and then. So many unnecessary people were just moving around to attract my attention. Even the singing part wasn't exciting either, failing to rival the songs in Adams' Enchanted.Hope Amy's will have something more to show in the future.
