It's funny watching the elements come together in this complicated scam. On one hand, the set-up isn't quite as complex as it seems, but there's an easy sense of fun in every exchange.

It isn't all that great, actually. Really cheesy and very predicable of how certain scenes are gonna turn play out. However, I guess that's the charm of it all, because I would consider this one of my guilty pleasures.

'My Cousin Rachel's' mesmerising cinematography and superb acting excuse the rather slow pacing of the film. On a visual perspective, this film is a masterpiece. The cinematography by Mike Eley is nothing short of excellent and makes the film a visual delight, from start to finish. On top of that, the acting is superb, particularly by Rachael Weisz who plays the mysterious and overly complex character of Rachael brilliantly. However, it's in the plot that ultimately lets the film down. While it is certainly an engaging mystery, it's poorly structured and lacks clarity. The anticipated lead up to meeting the character of Rachael is ultimately a let down with an underwhelming scene that shows how overly complicated Rachael is, or rather how complicated the film makes her out to be. While it's certainly captivating and keeps you waiting until the end, the plot is quite muddled and never really makes it's intended statement properly. It leaves far too much up to contemplation that leaves the audience feeling dissatisfied. Alas, this movie is still a thoroughly entertaining film with fantastic acting and beautiful cinematography that deserves its critical acclaim.

My Cousin Rachel benefits from wonderful photography, costumes and art direction but is a listless bland adaptation of the Daphne du Maurier book.Rachel Weisz plays the captivating widow Rachel who pits her wits against Philip Ashley (Sam Claflin) not yet showing any maturity or even intelligence. Philip was going to task Rachel for her role on the death of his cousin and guardian Ambrose in Italy. When Philip meets Rachel he is instantly enchanted, the relationship becomes lusty but then doubts creep in. Does she have an Italian lover? Is she trying to poison him? Philip plans to hand over the fortune he has got from Ambrose on to Rachel with no thought as to how he is going to make his way through nineteenth century England without a pot to urinate in.Philip is too weak a character who easily becomes jealous and then wants to control Rachel. The ending is possibly contradictory and leaves more questions hanging. What else could explain Philip's illness if he has not been poisoned?Weisz gives an intriguing performance but Claflin is not able to match her.

Rachel, of course, comes out of the heart and mind of Daphne Du Maurier, the same author who gave us Rebecca and even if we never met her we discover she was a nasty piece of business, she also gave us Melanie Daniels in The Birds, the spoiled rich girl from San Francisco. Here, Rachel is more of an enigma and as played by Rachel Weisz, a dangerously, too good to be true lady of mystery. Rachel Weisz is absolutely captivating and perhaps that's why I was so aware of Sam Claflin's shortcomings as an an actor. I don't want to be unkind. He has presence and charm but I was painfully aware of the performance, specially when he has Rachel Weisz being totally present in the moment. Roger Michell allows the candles, the jewels and the locations to have their moments, beautifully. Recommend it for a stormy Sunday afternoon.

I must not have watched the same movie than the reviewers from the first two pages on here. I saw some pretty boring movies in my life but this one is just extremely boring. Don't watch this one if you are a little bit tired because you won't make it until the end. You will guarantee fall asleep. It's not because of the actors or the way of shooting the movie that this movie is so bad. It's just the story, it's boring, and not the greatest actor in the world can make this movie better. I just don't get why they would spend so much money to make a boring movie like this one. I just don't get it. The end was a bit better than 90 percent of the movie but it was just not worth the wait. I so wished I didn't lose my time watching My Cousin Rachel.
