My Enemy, My Brother Trailers

The eight-year Iran-Iraq War was one of the most brutal conflicts to devastate the region in the 20th century. Zahed was 13 years old when he enrolled in the Iranian army. Najah was 18 when he was conscripted into the Iraqi army, and he fought against Zahed in the Battle of Khorramshahr. Fast forward 25 years, a chance encounter in Vancouver between these two former enemies turns into a deep and mutually supportive friendship. Expanded from the 2015 short film by the same name.

It really made me laugh, but for some moments I was tearing up because I could relate so much.

I saw the original short, which was very powerful. So this extended story appears weaker by contrast. The short story was just about the 2 former soldiers on opposite sides of the Iran-Iraq war meeting many years later. The 2 war veterans now try to find / reunite with their families back in the middle east, with parts of the short pasted in to provide the back story. But this is an ongoing documentary film, not one based on known success, like Lion. Each man has his challenges. The Iranian has legal problems getting home. The Iraqi never formally married his wife, so his son is technically fatherless, and his biological family didn't even know of this relationship. In each case, they got something, but not everything they wanted, out of their quest. The movie shows the good and bad sides of family relationships, and the bad after-effects of war.
