One of the worst movies I've ever seen
There are moments in this movie where the great movie it could've been peek out... They're fleeting, here, but they're worth savoring, and they happen often enough to make it worth your while.
View MoreThis movie feels like it was made purely to piss off people who want good shows
View MoreIt's the kind of movie you'll want to see a second time with someone who hasn't seen it yet, to remember what it was like to watch it for the first time.
View MoreConsidering this film was made on nearly no budged written, directed, cut and the score composed by the same director I found myself pleasantly surprised by this film, While i found the first 20 mins of the film a bit lackluster i found that the film really picked up towards the middle and end where the story and characters really take shape. the film ends with a great message that I haven't seen as strongly in any other war movie iv'e watched. Most war movies and documentaries really try to hammer into you the '"Good Guys vs The Evil Bad Guys" idea completely suppressing the fact that at the end of the day these "Evil Bad Guys" were human too which overall i found a very refreshing watch and great message for the film.
View MoreIm half black, american. Ive been studying Germans from the Second World War since I was 9 after watching Indiana and the Last Crusade! I had a crush on Elsa Sneider and got fascinated about the Germans. American movies show their propagandized narratives about everything. The movie was slow at first, but if You know basic History about THE WAFFEN SS and how many of the soldiers werent even members of the NASDP(except OFFICERS) you'll understand that most Waffen SS weren't even nazis, as Nazis had to be members of the NASDP, which most Americans cant realize because America doesn't teach much about Waffen SS! I had a younger friend ask me what Waffen SS was. I guess thats when i Realized the schools aren't going into much during that War and that I had to watch Films like Saving Private Ryan and Der Untergang to understand The WAFFEN SS, in BATTLE were different in many cases than the SS cowards in Death camps and ghettos, anti partisan, etc. late war, most WAFFEN SS were younger than 18 and truly believed they were fighting for "The Fatherland" because in 1944-1945 they truly were surrounded so much, that the only German territory was GERMANY/Deutschland. So, yes! They really were fighting for their country. I just scrolled down to all the reviews. Saw pathetic Lies and fools stating all germams were monsters and that somebody actually wanted Atom bombs to be dropped on Germany. That indicates cowardice! And lack of education. War is never good. To write a review saying this movie is "dangerous" or that some coward wished a "nuke" was dropped on hitler not realizing the consequences indicates how hypocritical and tone deaf some are. As if people forgot what War is and has done. The moral of this film wasnt really to Prop up The Waffen SS, it was to EDUCATE us! Most americans fail to do basic research on Waffen SS. They blindly trust what they're told. Which is "all germans were nazis and evil!" Just look at call of duty video game which has "nazi zombies." That perpetuated the typical ignorance and misconceptions about that war. I encourage all the easily offended fools who failed to read subtitles of the film, to go watch Documentaries on Waffen SS in battle. Watching SS from Saving private ryan is different from Schindler's list. Fools vilify hitler for good reason, but those same fools fail to villify Stalin, whom was credited for killing more people than Hitler! Again, that's a detail that comes from basic reasearch on that war, many americans fail to do. Again, im American and HALF BLACK! Why am I the only american who wants to see that war from the German perspective? I once was told great advice. Look at a scenario from BOTH SIDES, then assess! Most Negative reviews failed to do that, and thus, they fail to expand their minds and grow as Humans. I suppose the haters of this film will watch DER UNTERGANG and say that's nazi propaganda, too?! That Film actually portrayed Accurately, the last days of The Reich and Hitler. Seems a lot of Overly sensitive liberal minded types get offended by History, as they turn away from it and shame anybody who dares to ask about it. Im the type that Seeks truth and answers. I'm sure all the easily offended and easily confused fools will Hate me because i'm not bashing this film. I actually cried a bit at the end. I wonder if that Offends anybody? I WAS confused about the end, though. How did the Two survive? The Wehrmacht deserter's wife was executed by fat gestapo cowards, but she was at the end? The Uniforms were Accurate! The fools saying this movie was boring and had weak sounds etc, can't understand that Filmmaking COSTS MONEY! And they had Vehicles and tanks and planes and weapons and uniforms and that cost a LOT of money! Sound effects and special effects also cost money, but I'd rather see Historically Accuate uniforms, vehicles and Weapons and have cheap effects than Great effects but Cheap weapons, uniforms and vehicles. Also, it seems the haters had difficulty reading subtitles. If you kept up with subtitles, you'd understand the movie. Acting wasn't perfect, like the SS Officer was being praised by Unterscharfuhrer and he kept nodding his head, which isnt HUMBLE! His character(the Officer/lieutenant) was a leader, and great leaders are Modest, don't like praise. So, him nodding his head to praise wasn't consistent with his character but nothing's perfect. I care a lot about history. In america, nobody cares for it. Instead, they want to forget it. Again, i'm Half Black! I grew up in the same city where Dr. Martin Luther King was Killed! I know what racism is! This film was NOT racist propaganda! I'm so tired of White liberals calling Everything racist! It's very offensive to me how White liberals water down what racism is! This film isn't a big Blockbuster budget film, but i Give credit to the POETRY of the dialogue from narrator, and the Accuracy of the uniforms and weapons. The writing wasn't perfect, but it was impressive in some areas. I was watching the film, the SS Sergeant/unterscharfuhrer changed near the end from the start. He sympathized for the Jewish Wife and wanted to save Her. How are the haters of this film ignoring that? It's a FICTIONAL FILM! The part where Sergeant asked his Superior "what are we fighting for?" Amd gets "i'm fighting for what I love." That made sense! Late war, most soldiers were confused and numb on both sides, but Germans had to believe they were fighting for family and Fatherland. In the case of Sergeant, that was the case because he began to hate the Nazi politics and leadership. If the foolish haters actually paid close attention to subtitles, they'd know that. But easily offended, small minded fools stubbornly ignored details and reasearch and adopted the typical anti german propaganda. Every bad review got tons of "helpful" support. The positive reviews got little "helpful" support. Indicates the small minded fools want everybody to hate this film because it shows the war from the Waffen SS soldier perspective. And Liberal minds hate that because all germans are evil nazis and they all need to suffer, according to a few negative reviewers of this film. It's interestingly hypocritical for some haters of this film to demonize german soldiers and then expect to gain support in hating others, as they blame the hated for hating. How can I hate them when I barely know them? History CAN be distorted. Ask Russian who beat the Germams and won that war? The russian will say RUSSIA beat germany and won that war, as well as having the best tanks and weapons. Germans had the best tanks and weapons. Again, basic research will show that nazi scientists helped america develop NASA to beat soviets to space! Yes! America Recruited Nazi Scientists to beat Soviets to space! I had to research this on my own because america doesn't teach that. Im not even republican but I loathe liberals because they are irrational and can't research things and get easily offended by the truth. It's sad that Americans still think all germams were nazis and evil and need to have a nuke dropped on them(again, that was an actual reviewer's opinion). This film is NOT DANGEROUS! Not Proganda! And All the bad reviews were written by fools who failed to pay attention to the details and subtitles, who failed to do basic research on Waffen SS in battle, failed to DISCERN Waffen SS from Death Camp SS, and failed to omit their personal biases and ignorance from their assessments. What is "politically correct?" I never liked that horrible term. Fools get offended rather than try to understand things! Nothing is perfect! But as i read the bad reviews and saw how many fools found the biased bad reviews "helpful" I realized none of those fools wanted to give this film a chance. None of those fools wanted to understand the other side's perspective. Instead, the cowardly fools that bash this film want to say it's dangerous and nazism, but they're the fools who misundrrstand the film. And they seem to do themselves a misservice as they Give Up on Seeking Facts, details and Understanding of others. Especially those whom they fail to understand, which isnt great for Growth and Progress of Humanity! If Racists are Stubborn and hate those whom they don't know, and call them "dangerous," what's tje difference from these fools who stubbornly avoid understanding the Characters portrayed in this film, as they deam the film dangerous? When will people grow up and start asking the right questions about History and Things and People they don't understand? This film should only be watched by people who have done basic research on that war, Waffen SS and can keep up with Subtitles. Because in America, subtitles scare americans. And low budget films definitely scare americans. Why is everything political and evil to liberals? I ask as a non political type who just wants other humans to use basic common sense and ask Decent questions about History and other things. Disregard all the negative reviews and especially disregard all the "was this review helpful" contributions as they're all spitefully hating on this film and anybody who liked it, or understood it. When will humans stop acting like children?
View MoreI enjoyed this movie overall, with some big issues to mention. As a vehicle for some good re-enactment and action scenes, despite the low budget, it delivered. Good depiction of German small unit tactics at the time, and a surprising amount of authentic gear, vehicles, etc. The battles are for the most part not very large, but representative of small squad to platoon-sized engagements that were common throughout the war. There were some very noticeable low-budget CGI firing effects for most weapons, but the quality of the sound design made up for it - actually some of the best sound design I've seen in a low budget war flick. Effects for specific types of weapons are very realistic, well- mixed, and sound exactly as they would sound in an open field, small clearing, or a thick wooded forest at the base of a mountain valleyTo top it off, the filming does take place in several picturesque locations. There wasn't much character development for all but a handful of the SS soldiers, and not surprisingly the writers chose to focus on an individual soldier who was not the most gung-ho Nazi to begin with, Herckel. Despite his obvious dislike for Jews and a belief that they were primarily responsible for Germany's problems, over the course of the war Herckel loses faith in the strength and capability of the German war machine, as his unit faces repeated defeats at the hands of the Soviets. As time goes on, he slowly learns the truth about what the Germans were doing to the Jews, and begins to struggle with the SS' treatment of POWs, and internal battles with his conscience over what he is really fighting for.Ultimately Herckel finds that the only thing he has left to fight for (as the title implies) is his loyalty to his country and his fellow soldiers. The narrated diatribes at the beginning and closing of the film were really unnecessary, and as others have mentioned, the narration at the film's closing seems to attempt to whitewash the atrocities of the SS and the Nazi regime, and to compare the Holocaust to allied killings of POWs (which were already primarily in retribution for the SS' no prisoner policy) and the use of atomic weapons against Japan. Without the closing narration, it could have been a solid low-budget WWII film. With them, it borders on neo-Nazi apologetics, and one has to wonder about the political leanings of the writers and producers at that point. Don't bother watching the English dubbing, it's terrible.
View MoreMore of a 8 or 9 but I rated it a 10 to counter balance the uber PC voters. It seems that a lot of reviewers have a hard time with this movie because it doesn't have a clear cut good vs. bad story. Sorry, if that is what you were looking for, watch Star Wars. Good vs. Bad only truly exists in the fictional world. Most soldiers from the various armies were simply doing their best to survive. All sides committed horrendous atrocities and that is what this movie tries to get across to its audience. If you don't agree, do a google search for the "bombing of Dresden", "Rape of Nanking", "Bombing of Nagasaki", etc.... There are no good guysThat said, I started this movie expecting to waste a couple of hours on another stupid war flick. About 20 minutes into the movie, I was sure I was wasting my time. But slowly the movie drew me in making it clear how the soldiers on the front felt. Depression, hopelessness and loneliness. The director is able to turn your emotions if you give him time.In addition, the uniforms, equipment and historical timeline were are accurate which isn't common in most war movies anymore. Both depressing and worth watching.
