Yo, there's no way for me to review this film without saying, take your *insert ethnicity + "ass" here* to see this film, like now. You have to see it in order to know what you're really messing with.
View MoreFunny, strange, confrontational and subversive, this is one of the most interesting experiences you'll have at the cinema this year.
View MoreA film of deceptively outspoken contemporary relevance, this is cinema at its most alert, alarming and alive.
View MoreGreat example of an old-fashioned, pure-at-heart escapist event movie that doesn't pretend to be anything that it's not and has boat loads of fun being its own ludicrous self.
View MoreThis film covers the life of Lucky from being a cocky teenager to his coming to national attention when his huge cache of stolen items is seized by the police. In between, he tries very hard to romance a 'nice girl' and spends the rest of his time stealing--mostly, though not exclusively, luxury cars.I live in the States and am not Indian. This is important because I think "Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!" is a film that probably plays much better if you are Indian. As for me, I didn't see Lucky Singh as anything other than a fast-talking thief. I can only assume that Indians see him as a bit of an anti-hero because he mostly seems to steal from rich folks. So, for me, it was a film about a guy who was a crook and a cocky jerk. He'd steal and then flash his pretty eyes at the screen...but that wasn't enough for me. Overall, a very disappointing film because I simply disliked EVERYONE in the film...EVERYONE...and the plot never was particularly engaging. The music and opening titles, however, were nice.
View MoreA delightful charming film that has to be welcome in a Hindi Film Industry.Few films show us answers and reasons, few films challenge our observation and leave questions for us, so that we find answers. This films challenged me, I was surprised to see Paresh Rawal play 3 different characters and all 3 betray our super hero thief Lucky(Abhay Deol). So this commonality of characterisation was what Dibakar Banerjee wanted to show to us. Also, lot many questions are shown as to how silly people are, actually are they so silly? May be yes, if you give in you will enjoy this throughly and even if you do not then you are left to explore the logic and in each character seems to be adamant about what it wants to achieve. The most plus point of this film is Abhay Deol who plays Lucky and is fluent at what he does. He does not seem to be acting anywhere, just reacting to what has happened and just doing what that character would expectedly be doing. Actually a weird character but after a while we just get used to his pranks and his ways of stealing. Nicely written by Dibakar Banerjee in bringing out the milieu and flavor of a Delhi that is all in its characters, the cinematography should also be commended. Above and all, I would go with the costume design that are actually gaudy flashy and yet seem to be speaking a language of the character. I would deride, editing though and editing could have been lot better. Lot many scenes just to establish a character even after that character has made an impact...I am talking about Gogi (Paresh Rawal -2) and too many photographs in the last part of the film. I would have enjoyed it more had we known how Lucky plots each theft and what goes on in his mind.I would go with a 3/5 for a movie that seems to be simple yet is bring alive by its characters that are multi layered and have for sure made an impact.
View MoreOye Lucky Lucky Oye directed by Dibakar Banerjee is an excellent comedy movie.Based on a real life incident,Oye Lucky Lucky Oye is a smart, brilliant comedy film which test your intelligence.Story: Inspired by the incredible true story of Lucky Singh (Abhay Deol), an extremely charismatic and fearless confident man and thief who socialized with the rich, famous and influential of Delhi society and then proceeded to rob them blind. He was strongly detested by the police and had stolen millions by the time he was caught. A modern day Robin Hood with a twist, he robbed both the rich and the poor without prejudice. Nothing was too big nor was anything too insignificant to escape his attention. The film opens with his trial and charts his rise from the projects of crime ridden suburban Delhi to the very heart of the corridors of power. Along the way he makes lifelong friends, falls in love an manages to outwit the entire law and order machinery. The writing is smart. The direction is fabulous.Kudos to Dibakar Banerjee! The dialogs are the high-point of the film.Another reason why Oye Lucky Lucky Oye rocks is because of its award-worthy performances.Abhay Deol is amazing. But the scene stealer, here is,Paresh Rawal who essays the role of three different characters excellently. He is brilliant.Neetu Chandra in a small role is good.Manu Chandra as Lucky's friend is excellent.Archana Puran Singh is good too.Manjot Sinh is funny. All in all,Oye Lucky Lucky Oye is a must-watch because it is one of those few films which really tests your intelligence.I am giving it a eight on ten.Must Watch!
View More'Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!' is a dark comedy satire that revolves around a young thief and is set in Delhi. Banerjee portrays Delhi and its inhabitants with a wonderful sense of humour and he brings out its essence while one can easily relate to the characters. The cool soundtrack, slick and witty dialogues, intriguing visuals and smooth camera-work brings style. The screenplay is solid but the pacing is a little uneven. In some parts, the film tends to drag. It needed a little more energy. I like how Banerjee makes the romance angles (Lucky' childhood romance and his romantic involvement with Sonal) a part of the story without allowing it to dominate the entire film (which is one mistake many directors seem to make).Abhay Deol is rightfully cast in the title role. He has definitely moved further ahead of all the actors of his generation by experimenting with different films and succeeding in delivering convincing performances. To Lucky he brings a certain class, slickness, depth and energy and yet, being a clever thief, there's a vulnerability about him that is very effectively portrayed. Neetu Chandra is gorgeous and has a strong screen presence. Three Paresh Rawals is a little too much to bear. I would have preferred him to play one character, Gogi Bhai. He doesn't bring that much difference between the characters other than what he achieved with make-up.'Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!' is overall a well-made film with class, wit and humour with a few minor glitches. Dibakar Banerjee shows immense promise and I am already looking forward to s forthcoming ventures.
