Sadly Over-hyped
Purely Joyful Movie!
Exactly the movie you think it is, but not the movie you want it to be.
View MoreOne of the film's great tricks is that, for a time, you think it will go down a rabbit hole of unrealistic glorification.
View MoreI traded this DVD for an AOL Free Trial CD and I am better man for it. I would rather down a bottle of Ipecac than watch five minutes of this "movie" again. The whole thing is interviews with out-of-work, coked-out celebrities giving staged interviews about "What if" Pauly Shore was dead. The highlights of the film include the foul mouth stylings of Verne Troyer, bitter about being short and a slightly coherent and heavily drooling Tom Sizemore. If you feel so compelled to buy this movie, I recommend you send me the $6 this costs at Target and I'll be happy come over and put a plastic bag over your head for few minutes... I promise, the effect will be the same.
View MoreFirst off, let me say that I was never a fan of Pauly Shore. In fact, I could never understand how it was even possible that someone this unfunny was able to have a career as a comedian, but hey ... Despite my claims of hatred, though, I still managed to watch everything he'd done, in some kind of a masochistic, painful cycle, and my hatred for him continued to grow and grow.So it was inevitable that I would eventually catch 'Pauly Shore Is Dead', but what was surprising is how truly funny the film turned out to be. It's not perfect, by any stretch, and has a few moments that seem a little forced and even sentimental (such as the guardian angel visits), but all in all, I have to say this is one hell of a funny movie, and whether you like him or not, I think it would be hard not to admit some kind of respect for a man who is so willing to make fun of himself. It is his sense of humor about himself that ultimately makes the film work, and I must admit that between the self-effacing plot line and the surprising amount of work that went into making the film, Shore has really gone up in my book. I still think he might be in the wrong line of business, but at least he's grounded enough in reality to realize that possibility as well.Highly recommended to anyone who enjoys watching any celebrity spoof themselves, as the film is loaded with numerous amusing cameos. Also check out the deleted scenes, a highlight being the rendition of the song 'It's Been A While'. Check it out, and you may be as pleasantly surprised as I was.Good work, Wiez!
View MoreI could not get over how good this movie was. Witty, wild, and satirical, heavily so, all spectrums of humor. Incredibly self-mocking, with stories within stories, and no piece of the plot not mocked from within. A major wink towards most everything Hollywood, including himself. A truly brilliant film. From where, I dunno, cos I was not a fan at all of the earlier stuff he did for MTV and his movies, but this was a film that made me laugh, made me smirk, and made me nod my head in appreciation of the wit and satire of everything Hollywood. Every time he went the mocking of the serious, he went then do something sick; it was really well done. The cameos make it even more effective, and the performance by the actor from Deadwood, W. Earl Brown, was priceless. Bill Mahr and Ben Stiller were really funny, too, in their really limited but excellent cameos. It's interesting to read the polarized comments for this film here, and obviously, funny movies are a very subjective thing (what makes one person laugh, etc.), but I felt this relatively short movie was fast paced, extremely witty, and encompassed many "issues" relating to fame, egos, and careers in a very ficked up industry. - walkman
View Morewell... we rented this one based on the premise that Pauly finally reached the realization that he sucks and that he was making fun of the fact that his career was dead. instead, we are supposed to believe that this imbecile has enough brains to concoct his own death visa-vi using a dead cadaver that he has stolen from the LA county morgue. if you can live with that absurdity from the get-go... maybe you can stomach this movie for what its worth... which is Nothing! this was the biggest piece of crap we had the misfortune of watching in the last 6 months (before that, it was trash called 13 SECONDS). do yourself a favor... no matter what sort of hype you hear about this idiot and his movie... DO NOT RENT IT!!!!!!
