Just perfect...

Great story, amazing characters, superb action, enthralling cinematography. Yes, this is something I am glad I spent money on.

The movie turns out to be a little better than the average. Starting from a romantic formula often seen in the cinema, it ends in the most predictable (and somewhat bland) way.

This movie is a straight-up combination of Rounders, Diner, and The Color of Money. It is hard to watch for a single minute without thinking in the back of your head that you've seen the same exact thing somewhere else before. The acting leans towards wooden (except for the typically excellent Christopher Walken) and the script thinks it's more clever than it really is (example, the gag "hustle" about the RV salesman's shoes). As a pool player, it's fun to see pool on film. Two caveats though. First, most of the pool footage is so zoomed-in that the shots are obviously being done by someone else in a different location, and it's jarring and distracting. Of course the actors can't all be expert pool players but it would be nice to see some of the clothing and scenery that you would expect, and not just balls on tables. Second, the characters are almost always playing 9-ball but also almost always trying to pocket all the balls, which is unrealistic. This may be a concession that a general audience will not know the rules of 9-ball but to anyone who does, it makes the pool scenes surreal.Overall though I appreciate movies about pool and this movie is a solid effort, particularly at its relatively low production cost of $4M, so, a strong 7/10.

The critics hated this flick, which in some cases can be a blessing. If your rent check has ever been hanging on the end of your cue, you'll appreciate the story as well as the characters. The pool talent speaks for itself in this movie, while being used in enough scenes to keep your interest. There are a few superfluous side plots, but there's only so much you can do in a pool movie, especially if you want to keep it real. Its not hard to find a bad review for this one, but if you read some of the comments, it seems most people simply DON"T GET IT. Complaining that its like another movie (every pool movie) is as lame as panning movies about race cars because they aren't as good as Grand Prix or Winning. One submission actually suggested that Vince Vaughn would have been a better choice for the lead, so are we to be believe that Will Ferrell would have been a better choice for Chris Walken's role? Lets face it folks. Pool is not held in very high esteem, and Snooker is much too difficult for most to play or embrace the strategies and time requirements.Pool Hall Junkies is not the Hustler, nor was it intended to be. Its another movie with some good scenes, some decent acting by decent actors (although Ricky S would not have been my first pick for the protégé) and its considered a CLASSIC among some pro billiard players who don't pick it apart for its faults but rather enjoy it for its entertainment value. YES real Pros. Men and even some ladies from the WPBA tour. Some of the world's best were at the Premiere. And for the Vince V fans . . . . lets face it; the only actor in the world who is more 1 dimensional is Kevin Costner.Lemme think! Waterworld? The Postman? No thanks . . . Junkies blows 'em away. But then again, we're dealing with a public who is fascinated with the qualities of fast food eateries and Paris Hilton.

Horrible. The dialogue was just bad as well as cheesy. I had to force myself to watch the entire thing. The acting was bad as well... almost as though he was reading everything off a teleprompter. Even walken couldn't save the movie, i'm sure he did everything he could but his lines were just bad. The lines and the formula were so stereotypical, the concept(pool) isn't too mainstream but the structure was. Coldfire gives this movie two BIG THUMBS DOWN! Maybe that explains why i haven't seen any of the actors since. It reminds me of that steven sigal film.... ONLY I COOK FOR THE CAPTAIN *punching and kicking ensues*.p.s. dialogue came up as spelled wrong? wha?!

The movie overall was satisfactory. The only actors that carried the movie were the younger brother, and Walken. The leading actor Mars was not believable at all as this living on the edge billiards con man. Granted, the scenes of them playing pool was cool, and they had great trick shots, but most of the acting was sub par. Even the amazing twist in the end was crap. Throughout the movie Chaz plays this tough guy who doesn't put up with anything. So when Mars takes the shot and misses he still gets another shot? Thats stupid. He had one shot, he missed and should of paid. The whole point of the bet was to make one shot, not to win the game. Plus, after he missed the shot and tried for the other shot, Chaz should have shot him and taken the money. So, overall the movie was poorly cast, poorly acted and there shouldn't be all this hype on a movie that tries to be the "Swingers," or "Rounders," of the pool world.
