Wonderful character development!
Nice effects though.
Mostly, the movie is committed to the value of a good time.
View MoreThere are moments in this movie where the great movie it could've been peek out... They're fleeting, here, but they're worth savoring, and they happen often enough to make it worth your while.
View MoreThis movie has tons of good reviews...honestly I'm shocked. I'm guessing maybe some people who worked on the movie and Fred Durst's mom came by. This was really bad. I knew within the first three minutes that the acting was utter garbage, and it never got any better. Seriously, no one is believable. It's awful. The story is cool, but it's been done before and you know what's going to happen from the very beginning. There's not really any suspense. Honestly, the way it was handled makes it somehow worse because it does have a cool premise that is ruined. At any rate, there's a reason this was straight to video...avoid!
View MoreSomeone is commenting this movie as odd and weird. No. It's not eccentric, really it tells us a story that is DRAMATICALLY TRUE. Just think: a socioeconomic system, almost closed, were the sustainability is granted by the demographic equilibrium. Dystopia? Don't you recognize what politicians are right now doing in Europe, trying to balance a population that is becoming elderly and less productive with a wild immigration? The so-called "Integration" of the strangers is a political matter, not an odd fantasy. In the end this movie is a beautiful, quite surprising allegory of the contemporary western world (above all Europe) and more than "The Lottery", in my opinion it resembles "1984". Actors are playing in a very effective way, Jeremy Sisto is truly in the part, action is sweet, never really strong but with a constant rhythm that makes the vision quite pleasant, anyway entertaining and subtly uncomfortable, because of the growing tension. Photography, script and editing are quite good, absolutely above the average. Watch this movie just thinking in the background at the future world that our politicians are preparing for our sons!
View MoreI must say that reading the plot synopsis, I had high expectations from Population 436. The main gist and idea of the story sounded original and promising, plus I've never had the chance to see Fred Durst act outside Limp Bizkit's music videos.Unfortunately, the film didn't follow through. The main idea was the only thing original about it, everything else was cliché to the point of boredom. The turning of events was predictable and seemed uninspired, the characters were replicas of other characters from other such films (like The Village), and even what some might call "the twist" was obvious and without any surprises. As Horror fans, when we're able to anticipate the next move, it means the film isn't that good, that's my personal opinion. As for the acting? Charlotte Sullivan was beautiful, and that was the only thing that shined above others. The rest were regular actors with regular acting, Fred Durst was nothing special, and neither was the cinematography. I personally feel that this film really didn't live up to the potential it had, which is unfortunate. All in all? The film was fun to watch, the characters were relatable and the story managed to get you emotionally involved. But not in any way better than thousands of films I could have watched instead. So I guess this film is recommended to those who haven't yet had much experience with the Horror genre, or that aren't looking for anything special but rather just something to kill 85 minutes.
View MoreI'm almost 70 and a bit old for this type of film, but I'm actually a fan of suspense-mystery-thrillers, and while this one was not completely original, it didn't disappoint. First of all, I liked the lack of special effects. The cinematography was beautiful, and while some felt the movie was slow, I appreciated the leisurely pacing. The reviewers keep mentioning similarities to "The Twilight Zone", and "The Wicker Man" (1974 version I hope), and they are right. But it also resembles some aspects of "The Invasion of the Body Snatchers", and the ending was a little like the old EC horror comics of the 50's. They often would lead you in a certain direction, then surprise you at the end with an ironic climax which played against expectation. In this film, the evil doings and religious ignorance the townsfolk display leads the viewer to expect the perpetrators to be exposed and the hero victorious, only to instead find that the townsfolk are pleasing God after all. Tragically amusing! Jeremy Sisto did a fine job as the Census Taker. I haven't seen him since "Grand Canyon" from 1991, where he played a 15 year old. The rest of the cast was satisfactory. I found the script to be intriguing, and while some reviewers found it predictable, I liked how the ending tied all the loose ends together cleverly. Unlike most of the "in your face" sadistic graphic trash that passes for horror films today, this atmospheric suspense film is a very pleasant and entertaining surprise. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and believe it is quite an original story, considering how many movies have been totally derivative in this genre.
