This movie was so-so. It had it's moments, but wasn't the greatest.
View MoreThe story, direction, characters, and writing/dialogue is akin to taking a tranquilizer shot to the neck, but everything else was so well done.
View MoreWow that was so bad. It's so bad partly because it does a horrible job explaining the many holes it digs for itself. And by the end of the film it makes even less sense. The twist that it tried to convey only completely makes it more confusing and it's just poorly written. I'm angry for war watching this.
View MoreRobert DeNiro, Cillian Murphy, Sigourney Weaver, and Toby Jones star in "Red Lights" from 2012. When I first started watching this I thought, "Robert DeNiro and Sigourney Weaver in a horror film?" I don't like horror and was shocked that such fine actors would do one.But "Red Lights" isn't a horror film despite some horror elements. It's about a paranormal debunker Margaret Mathison (Weaver) and her assistant Tom (Murphy) who go around the country exposing faith healers and mediums. Weaver teaches a class at the university, in direct opposition to the work of a fellow professor (Jones) who has a well- funded parapsychology research department. When renowned Uri Geller type Simon Silver (DeNiro) decides to come out of retirement, Tom insists to Margaret that they work on debunking Silver, and she refuses, giving her reason in a moving monologue.Nevertheless, Tom persists, putting himself in danger, bringing the film to a powerful ending.I am not sure why this film has such a low rating - I enjoyed it. True, of the two big twists, one was easily guessed. The acting was wonderful, and as someone wrote, it was great to see Sigourney Weaver, who like many actresses has aged out of leading lady status, regrettably. When she was in her twenties, she had the voice lesson after mine. She went on to a wonderful career, and she should still have one.I love Cillian Murphy, one of the most interesting-looking actors around. He gives an excellent performance. DeNiro as Silver is his usual strong presence.I thought the ending was fabulous! The film itself is slightly reminiscent of a '60s film, "The Power" starring George Hamilton and Suzanne Pleshette.
View MoreI have always been interested in movies about psychics and other abilities. This movie doesn't really do anything groundbreaking with regard to these subjects. But it does manage to entertain to some extent. One of the strong points about this movie is the presence of talented actors like Robert de niro, Cilian murphy and Sigourney weaver. Robert de niro does impress and gives a creepy performance as the enigmatic Silver. Towards the end, there are some hammy scenes which appear jarring. Cilian murphy has done a good job and he is the central character of the movie. The last part of the movie is quite disappointing. The melodramatic scenes, the predictable twists, the hammy acting were all quite irritating. The twist doesn't make much sense since we can actually guess that Silver does have some abilities, at least in the earlier years. It is just far too difficult for him to pull it off. There are too many things which remain unresolved for me to take the twist seriously. Even then the twist is still predictable because of all the foreshadowing throughout the movie. I still give it a 5 because of some good performances and the fact that it didn't put me to sleep.
View MoreThis movie could have been really good, but is not! It's incredible how all the tension build during the first half of the movie it's lost during the other half it's like if the Director and the writers got lazy and rush the finale. The actors made a good effort to keep up with the movie, but it's just horrible how all the introduction of the main character Dr. Tom Buckley (Murphy) goes from an intelligent, clever and motivated assistant professor to the Dumb##$$ ludicrous, naive person of the finale, it's just not coherent,. SUCH A SHAME! Absolutely ridiculous! Sigourney Weaver makes also a good effort. All and all, I think it's not worth to watch it even in a dull Sunday afternoon. 3 out of 10
