I am only giving this movie a 1 for the great cast, though I can't imagine what any of them were thinking. This movie was horrible

There's a more than satisfactory amount of boom-boom in the movie's trim running time.

I was surprised with this one, surprised with where it went, surprised with the ending, just a good psychological thriller that had me asking what do you believe? Its along the lines of Dead Calm (replace boat with remote cabin) and admittedly kinda slow to get going but I did like the atmosphere and Scottish location. It follows Kate (Thandie Newton) and Martin (Cillian Murphy) as they try to repair their strained relationship by revisiting a remote island cottage where they were once happy. The cracks in their relationship start to grow worse though as he generator shorts out and radio signals to the mainland prove increasingly erratic. Then one day an injured soldier (Jamie Bell) is washed ashore. He claims that a lethal airborne virus is devastating the outside world, and they must barricade themselves inside the cottage if they want to survive.Lots of twists here, I mean I did not for a second imagine the airborne virus angle and I liked imagining how I would handle the situation, would I believe him? This wasn't a plot that I'd ever seen done before. The acting is also excellent, with just the three of them playing off each other for the most part. 11/1/15

The journalist Kate (Thandie Newton) and her estranged husband, the architect Martin (Cillian Murphy), rent an isolated house in Fairweather Cottage in the Blackholme Island expecting to rekindle their love and save their marriage after a miscarriage of Kate. The owner, Doug (Jimmy Yuill), brings the couple in his boat and they have only a Citizen Band (CB) radio to communicate with him. Soon they have problem with the generator and Doug helps them, repairing the equipment. When Kate sees a wounded stranger in the island, she calls Martin and they bring him to the house. They note that the man is dressed with military uniform and has a weapon, and Martin hides the gun. The stranger wakes up and tells that he is Private Jack Corman (Jamie Bell) and he is fleeing from a pandemic in the continent. Further, they must isolate the house to protect themselves against the deadly airborne virus. Kate does not buy his story but Martin gives his gun back. Who is Jack? Is he telling the truth?"Retreat" is a boring and annoying psychological thriller, with a terrible story and unlikable characters. There are many flaws in the plot and stupid reactions and plot points. Thandie Newton's character is irritating and she has histrionic performance. The final plot point with the truth about Jack is kind of absurd. My vote is three.Title (Brazil): Not Available on DVD or Blu-Ray

Martin, Kate, Jack - Retreat doesn't need many more characters to play with the audience's emotions. Jamie Bell' performance is outstanding. Jack's behavior triggers many emotions and Jamie does an excellent job delivering Jack's fierce and intense lines and actions. I have to admit Martin's personality is quite difficult to grasp. As Retreat doesn't contain much dialog, it's a challenge at times to understand what he feels and why he reacts the way he does. Don't get me wrong, I liked Cillian's performance, but I couldn't care that much for Martin. His character develops in leaps I can't comprehend sometimes. Whereas Jack literally penetrates my mind, Martin appears hollow and indifferent. Thandie Newton is awesome, although in the beginning I wasn't sure if I truly like her. She develops nicely though and turns out to be much stronger than one might guess. Retreat is a psychological thriller and succeeds in keeping your mind busy. It doesn't feel like an actual movie though; it rather feels like a play. Thus I wouldn't recommend it to people who seek action and entertainment.

This is a sparse but nicely filmed thriller which I was drawn to by an interesting premise and a decent looking cast. It starts off very slowly, maybe too slowly but gradually once the mysterious soldier played by Jamie Bell appears the tension increases as you try and decide if the threat is real or imagined. This is a film that keeps you guessing right to the end.Retreat boasts a very impressive cast. Jamie Bell, Cillian Murphy and Thandie Newton are all excellent actors and all put in good performances. The isolated and stunning location provides a welcome diversion at times from the claustrophobic setting inside the cottage. This is a decent thriller with what I thought was a very good ending. Definitely worth catching if you get the chance.
