We've seen this movie- or a variation thereof- dozens of times before: Guy meets girl, guy falls in love with girl, guy loses girl, guy spares no effort to get girl back. Throw in a violent plot twist involving adultery and betrayal, and you have "Revenge", a movie with entertaining elements that nonetheless falls a bit short.Recently retired US Navy Pilot Jay Cochran (Kevin Costner) visits old friend and crime lord Tibey Mendez (Anthony Quinn) at his palatial estate in Mexico. Here, he meets Tibey's wife Miryea (Madeline Stowe), a reserved, stunning brunette 30 years his junior. Almost immediately, an attraction is felt between Cochran and Miryea, made more so by Tibey's attention to business and the age gap between him and his wife. Cochran and Miryea sleep together and are caught- with devastating consequences for all involved."Revenge" is hurt by several factors. The wild implausibility of a decorated Navy pilot having a Mexican Drug Lord as a close friend strains credibility with the viewer from the start. And though we are supposed to sympathize with Cochran for being beaten to within an inch of his life by Mendez' henchmen, Costner plays the character with an arrogance that makes it tough to do so. Throw in Quinn's visible heartbreak at having his wife stolen, and the Costner character comes across as almost totally unsympathetic. Only our concern for Miryea and the violence showered upon her allow us to care about Costner's frenzied search for her. This is no feel good movie, as all the principal characters suffer dearly: Cochran is nearly killed, Tibey loses his wife and a dear friend, and Miryea is subjected to unspeakable acts of brutality because of her betrayal. Even Cochran's dog is killed. Disney it ain't."Revenge" has its moments and benefits from some good acting. Quinn is in his element here and gives a solid portrayal of a crime lord whose charming veneer belies his brutal nature. Stowe is gorgeous, and plays her role with a waif-like innocence. As such, her character's fate strongly resonates with the viewer. Miguel Ferrer and John Leguizamo do good work as troubleshooters helping Costner find his love. And the always enjoyable James Gammon has a great bit role as a down-on-his-luck Texan. Costner is probably the weakest link here, and since it's his movie, that's a problem.Worth a look, but no new ground broken here.

I must admit that I have this movie in my 'Guilty Pleasures' collection. I am a sucker for stunning cinematography. Shot in Mexico, this Harlequin Romance is shot with many layers within each frame composition. The use of flowing drapes and curtains transform this world into a ultra-vivid paradise. Frequent use of tinting and long lenses deliberately push the landscape photography into gorgeous tourism commercials (Tony Scott has a background in TV spots). The story itself doesn't try to pretend it's anything more than the title suggests. Kevin Costner and Madeleine Stowe have an affair. Anthony Quinn is a big tycoon who is used to violence as a way of exacting his power. Miguel Ferrer and John Leguizamo are thinly drawn characters who happen to help Costner out once Quinn finds out about the affair. At this point, seedy Mexican dives become glowing and colorful hideouts as Costner tries to find Stowe, now left for dead somewhere. Smoke fills every shot, the heavy backlight look that was popular in the 80s. There's not much chemistry between Costner and Stowe, who tries to sound latino. Which is probably why this film was discarded and put out with the trash in the month of February. I happened to see it in a theatre, and almost could care less how well the acting or dialogue was. Here was a stunning location and unlikely subject matter for an A list movie star and director. The locations in Mexico are exploited with a loving eye to beauty. After all, this a romance.

No matter, this film is a true tragedy with the roles being portrayed with an air of believability rarely witnessed in today's films. Set in the Latino culture where men of wealth are expected to have female "friends" but their women are to remain faithful, the real drama her lies in the danger of violating this taboo. Kevin Costner's portrayal of the Navy pilot and Vietnam veteran who has spent the last twelve years of his life piloting fighter jets is remarkable. He is the man without a vision of his future, a man seeking meaning in the world and hoping to find the reality of his life. But with no purpose in his life, he quickly becomes enamored of the beautiful Madeline Stowe, the bored and unhappy wife of his "best friend", played by Anthony Quinn.Quinn is the wealthy and dangerous maker of politicians, and an associate of many people in power, but he is also both hated and feared by the common people. Around these three principles are Miguel Ferrer, John Leguizamo, and Sally Kirkland, an impressive trio of character actors who lend a hand to Costner in his search for Stowe. This is not a film with a happy ending, and the question you must ask yourself at the end is who is responsible? Rated R for violence, nudity, language, and sexual situations, this is definitely not for the teens or the children, and while I have a copy, I will leave it to you to decide to include it in your collection.
