A different way of telling a story
Blending excellent reporting and strong storytelling, this is a disturbing film truly stranger than fiction
View MoreIt is both painfully honest and laugh-out-loud funny at the same time.
View MoreLike the great film, it's made with a great deal of visible affection both in front of and behind the camera.
View MoreMark Kermode doesn't always get it right. He heaped praise on this and quite frankly, it's awful. Now granted I'm not one for musicals, but I can be persuaded, you can't knock a bit of West Side Story and the Belle and Sebastian scored God Help The Girl a few years back was fantastic. It took me three sittings to grind through this schmalzy crap though. The songs are annoying, the characters are annoying, the story largely uneventful, to the point that take the songs out of this and there'd be little left. I hoped that this would redeem Edinburgh on the movie map after the disappointment of Trainspotting 2. It does not. Choose... something else.
View MoreI'm sure I've seen worse films in my life - I just can't remember when. This was pure and utter cringe-worthy rubbish!! The singing, the songs and their environments couldn't have been worse. And inappropriate - my god! Honestly I've seen better kindergarten school plays. The story line was paper-thin and completely pointless. Why would anyone make a film like this? It wasn't entertaining and had nothing to say. I can only surmise it was produced as a tax dodge. I have absolutely no idea how this could have gotten 6.6 on IMDb. If I could, I'd give it 0.66
View MoreJust before I give my opinion on this film, I will say I am born in Scotland, and I am so happy a decent big budget type film has been made up here. This film is just simply fantastic, great songs (well of course, its The Proclaimers), very catchy and an overall great story. Fun to spot famous locations too, some parts filmed in Glasgow too, like the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and some of the pubs. It will definitely get the tourists into Scotland thats for sure! The acting is great and the singing is excellent. Also there is a nice little cameo from the famous duo which was greatJust watch it and you will not be disappointed!
View MoreAlright, so it was *my* fault for watching this; "The Film by The Proclaimers!", said the promos, and i should have known better than to think they've had a hand at directing. No, this is The Film *OF* The Proclaimers.Imagine a whole two hours of proclaimers videos; imagine each video tries to shovel in a different range of emotions. Imagine the most tenuous thread holding these together and you have Sunshine On Leith, whose sole real merit is to have scenes shot in Edinburgh in it.It's not a Comedy / Drama / Romance / Musical, it's a Musical of the worst, most disjointed kind, where very minor (and totally out of place) comedy/drama/romance have been thrown in.If you absolutely *adore* the proclaimers, if you LOVE musicals and care nothing about film quality, rush to the theatres because this film is for you. For anyone else, stay away. Its a stinker. My vote: 4/10 . and thats it.
