good film but with many flaws

The film never slows down or bores, plunging from one harrowing sequence to the next.

The movie's neither hopeful in contrived ways, nor hopeless in different contrived ways. Somehow it manages to be wonderful

A terrific literary drama and character piece that shows how the process of creating art can be seen differently by those doing it and those looking at it from the outside.

I confess that I did not know about this film, "Sweet November" released in 1968. It was Turner Classic Movies that introduced me to it. I was only aware of the remake with Keanu Reeves and Charlize Theron. However, this film, with Sandy Dennis and Anthony Newley, is far superior. The plot, as mentioned by others, is rather implausible: quirky woman Sarah (Dennis) has a different man living with her every month. For November, she chooses Charlie (Newley). He moves in with her with the agreement it will be for November only. The result is wonderful: her free spirit works on his uptight one, and this unexpected match seems to click. Sarah teaches Charlie to fulfill his dream of writing poetry and being a dreamer, and he teaches her to fall in love. I won't give away the very touching ending or why it is that Sarah has a different man every month and doesn't want to get emotionally involved. What really surprised me is how much I liked this film. The acting of the two main characters are what makes this odd little movie work. Some folks did not care for Sandy Dennis' somewhat neurotic acting style, but it works quite well for her character in this film. I was not aware much of Anthony Newley at all, but he is great here: charming and handsome, and yes, also somewhat neurotic. The film also shows us New York City, circa 1968, and Sarah's apartment is great and quirky, just like her. We lost both Sandy Dennis and Anthony Newley much too young!

I cannot remember much of the details, I just remember how I felt and the indelible impression it made on me when I was in college. If ever a true romantic sappy movie ever made for a sappy romantic like me this is it. Somewhere in Time was also pretty good, but like aged wine the finest Bordeaux next to the best California wine. I haven't seen it since and I have been looking for it. I would love to see it again.

It's been over thirty years since I saw Sweet November, and the final scene is indelible in my mind. The utter sadness of that scene. But I don't remember Sweet November as a sad movie; it was uplifting, making you look at life with gleaming fresh eyes. The 1968 version, Sandy Dennis/Anthony Newley, is a favorite of mine.Watching the 2001 re-make made me long for my old friend, the original Sweet November.

The movie was a charming romance more real than a Cinderella movie. The solution to Sara's problem emblematic of the late 1960s. The chemistry between Newley & Dennis was very real. I found Sara's zest for life, her strong personality, and her independance so compelling that I named my daughter Sara.
