Gripping story with well-crafted characters
The storyline feels a little thin and moth-eaten in parts but this sequel is plenty of fun.

View MoreHalfway through the '70s, this was the point where the Godzilla series finally ran out of steam - and lay dormant until the big guy's revival as the bad guy in 1984's RETURN OF GODZILLA. I'm happy to say that they ended the series on a high note, with one of the most colourful and spectacular entries I've ever seen. The sci-fi plot is a fun one packed with action and strange characters and devices. Okay, so it may be rehashed and unoriginal, but it's still a whole lot of fun.Following on from the end of the previous year's GODZILLA VS. MECHAGODZILLA, this opens with a stunning battle between the two monsters, where Godzilla sprays blood everywhere and gets mutilated before ripping off Mechagodzilla's head. Sadly this isn't a sign of things to come. Once again, there's another alien plot to take over the world, and once again our heroes manage to defeat them. Along the way we have more hilarious dubbing, even more so than usual (I liked it when guards surrounded a prisoner, and said "You won't escape now. Shoot!"), and lots of amusingly bad fashions (this was the '70s, after all), complete with large sideburns and even larger collars. Especially amusing are the Interpol team who act as the film's heroes, who basically epitomise '70s coolness. The violence here is quite strong for a Godzilla film, with a couple of people being gunned down in slow motion. There's also a surprising scene of artificial nudity, a first and only in the series (it was aimed at kids, after all.). The muddled plot takes in a cyborg girl, a dinosaur living under the ocean, an alien base underground, Godzilla, and the return of Mechagodzilla as an even more powerful monster. It's fast paced, and the monster battles, especially the ending, are really spectacular, filled with explosions and many colourful death rays and beams. Mechagodzilla doesn't die when you rip his head off anymore either! Titanosaurus is a rather funny creature, a dinosaur who looks like a model I once had as a kid, no more realistic than that. All together, this is a fun film for kids and adults alike, with colourful spacesuits, costumes and sets, plenty of action and incident, and a great score once again.
View MoreThe best Godzilla movie ever is Godzilla (1998). If you do not think so that's o.k. But if your mad about it grow up frat heads. This is the 15th Godzilla movie. The 11th Godzilla movie Godzilla vs the smog monster is better. The 16th Godzilla movie Godzilla 1985 or The return of Godzilla is also better. The 17th Godzilla movie Godzilla vs B.i.o.l.l.a.n.t.e is also better. It is still a very good movie. Very scary. See it. It is a very good monster movie. It is not as good the 22nd Godzilla movie Godzilla vs Destroyer. It is not as good as part 23 to the Japan Godzilla series Godzilla vs M.e.g.a.g.u.i.r.u.s. The 8th Godzilla movie Son of Godzilla is also better. But still it is a very good movie.
View More15th and final Godzilla film in the first series from Toho studios sees(ho-hum!) another group of alien invaders reclaim and rebuild what's left of MechaGodzilla, in one last desperate attempt to conquer the Earth by destroying Godzilla. Meanwhile, a traitorous Earth scientist has been in league with them, and programmed a new sea monster called Titanosaurus to help them in that goal. Can the Earth be saved from alien conquest once and for all? Uninspired to say the least, though Titanosaurus is an effective creation, and the tone unusually grim, which may not have appealed to children. Best thing about it is the fitting final fade-out of a departing Godzilla.
View MoreGodzilla comes to the rescue when an alien race rebuilds Mechagodzilla to destroy Earth's cities. A traitorous scientist gives them a second weapon: Titanosaurus. With Godzilla movies, I think it comes down to a simple equation: you either like them or you do not like them. Because, really, does the plot even matter? The characters seem like background to the main event: two (or more) guys in rubber suits beating each other up. And that is exactly what this film is. Do I care about the scientist or the aliens or any of that? Not really. And these guys know how to entertain. They made what is possibly the greatest Godzilla foe -- Mechagodzilla -- and then one year after destroying him, they bring him back. We did not even have to wait for him. They were like, sure, bring back the robot! And it works.
