This is ultimately a movie about the very bad things that can happen when we don't address our unease, when we just try to brush it off, whether that's to fit in or to preserve our self-image.

It's Fall, which means football season as well as back-to-school. It also means cheerleaders for both whether in high school or college. So I'm reviewing movies featuring high school cheerleaders for the occasion starting with this one which was a drive-in staple for '73. A personal note: during my high school years, I had a massive crush on one as I saw her blossom from 5th grade on up but I never got anywhere with her though I had some fond memories of dancing with her and occasionally talking to her. Anyway, this was quite a sexy movie to watch back in the late '80s when I rented the VHS tape from Blockbuster. I just saw it again on YouTube and saw one scene there that I remember was cut for the VHS one. It was the scene where the red-headed girl was having sex with the hamburger stand boy as this version was allowed to play to the end on YT as opposed to the one from Blockbuster which only briefly played the beginning of that scene. While I'm not surprised this was originally rated X, I was surprised this was really allowed at Blockbuster as they didn't allow such rated films there! (This one did have the 18+ classification on the label so children weren't allowed to rent this without an adult present) Nice twist having the janitor being some kind of loan shark for the class pimp (I think that's what he's supposed to be, I don't know). I'm guessing some of the girls didn't use their real names when appearing in this since they're credited as Stephanie Fondue, Jovita Bush, and Denise Dillaway! (I guess two of those names are real, I don't know.) Anyway, this was quite silly and very unbelievable concerning the plot but, hey, it's a nice fantasy for any male who'd love to make it with a cheerleader...

Basically a raunchy, bawdy soft-core high school comedy featuring liberated(..to say the least)sex crazy nympho cheerleaders who proceed to bang anyone with a pecker in sight.The big game is coming between Amorosa(..our cheerleaders' team)and Central and we spend some time with these girls as they commence in their randy activities of seducing or simply ravaging a host of males. Lots of panties come off and sex is frequent with the usual expected high school jokes, such as the filthy janitor(..with a peep hole in his equipment room to spy on the girls as they get undressed), the virginal innocent who yearns for the right sexual experience, locker room stripping, giant orgy between the football team and cheerleader squad(..which results in their being too drained physically to participate successfully in the big game), the final game itself and the hi-jinx that ensues in regards to how Amarosa must combat their foes(..there isn't much of a competition since the cheerleaders actually ball Central as well in order for both teams to be on equal footing!).There's sex between a cheerleader and the group's "supplier"(..he has the ability to supply them drugs and favors in regards to skipping certain classes)in a vehicle as it goes through a car wash. One of the cheerleaders actually humps the school bus driver as he steers down the block. Jeannie(Stephanie Fondue), the virgin newcomer to the squad, is almost gang raped by the football team who found her naked in their shower(..it was an initiation trick by her girls). Jeannie's father is seduced by Claudia(Denise Dillaway)while watching a football game as the cheerleaders were having a slumber party. Bonnie(Jovita Bush)eyeballs Jeannie's brother, discovers him masturbating to a nude mag, and immediately propositions him! Debbie(Brandy Woods)offers herself to the Amarosa's football coach(..he himself in little more than a jock strap)and he accepts, providing some rear end plumbing. Debbie and a cooker go at it in the back of his hamburger stand. And, the sexual encounters go on and on.I watched the other Cheerleaders movies before this(..Swinging & Revenge)and expected this would be tame in comparison..boy was I in for a surprise. This movie is essentially a series of executed fantasies. Down through time most or many of us have pondered the idea of making sweet love to a cheerleader. While I found myself particularly uncomfortable watching a girl sitting up in the lap of a much older, grinning-from-ear-to-ear bus driver(..missing some teeth), as he attempts to keep from hitting cars parked in the neighborhood, or the scene where a middle-aged father gets the ride of his life, seemingly in heavenly bliss, these are obvious dreams come true, printed to celluloid. We even get a lesbian encounter between Patty(Kimberly Hyde)and her cheerleader coach. The Cheerleaders is another exploitation feature which perfectly embodies the uninhibited spirit thriving during this decade after the summer of love overflowed it's sexually free ways, spilling into the 70's. The girls seem absolutely fine in shedding their clothes at any given moment.. Especially tasteless fare, directed and acted embracing the joyous nature of love-less sex. Yeah, I enjoyed it. The camera spends a great amount of time observing the cheerleader squad's derrière, and we often get long pans up and down their bodies. The uniforms are ridiculously short(..thanks guys!)so that even when they aren't naked, they might as well be.

Alright I get it sexploitation was the cool new film style sweeping the nation in the late sixties and seventies. I have no beef with that and it has nothing to do with being offended by the content. I just don't believe you can make an actual legitimate entertaining movie and still have nearly full on sex and nudity in it. You can quote Russ Meyer at me all day...it's porn and nothing more and it's only made campy and ridiculous because they just wanted to make porn that would reach a more mainstream crowd and essentially they did that. The Cheerleaders takes a stereotypical male fantasy and tries to slap some sort of plot to it which would have made a better, and lighter teen sex comedy the likes of Porky's or more modern American Pie. Instead when any sort of comedy or 'romp' begins to happen they break into the full on nudity and porn. I mean it wasn't a complete waste of time...I give it very small points for the attempt at something different as far as the plot goes however campy that may have been and the cast wasn't entirely unfortunate considering their main goal was to play the sluttiest group of teenage girls in the history of film. If any High School male saw this movie they'd wonder why their high school sucks so bad and this one the girls literally sleep with everyone, everywhere, any time, and any where.I don't know if I could bother going into any details about the cast. Most of the girls, in fact nearly all of them, were brand new to the screen and most of them, almost all of them, never did much of anything afterwards and if they did it was the same type of sleaze. Needless to say all of them are not ashamed to be in any state of nudity and they all do have their own little personalities from cheerleader to cheerleader and I think that shows some ability to act and show some talent. The guys in the film are all more or less the same from any skin flick show or porn movie. Mustaches, horny old guys, buff football players and the likes. Director and co-writer Paul Glickler made this film and made it for one reason and one reason only sexploitation on young naked cheerleaders and for succeeding in that I suppose he should be given kudos because he never did anything much after this.The plot is simple yet decent enough for me to give it a couple of points because it's ambitious for a porn movie. A new girl joins the cheerleading squad only to reveal that she is a virgin. The team captain likes this because one of her former cheerleaders quit because she was pregnant so she is determined to keep said girl a virgin. The other girls on the squad are determined to make her a bonafide cheerleader and get her in bed with any man they can possibly find. Along the way we are treated to the Cheerleading squad and their many, many seducing ways and well basically whoring around their town. I suppose if you want some soft core porn with a half decent story that you might watch then The Cheerleaders might impress you but if this is what classifies classic than I am frightened for movie history. Trash. 3/10

This movie was a little nugget of joy that came across my screen last night. The plot was--well, let's be serious here--nonexistent, but the campy nature of the movie won me over. I immediately thought of "Night Calls: The Movie" and its sequel when I watched this film. Then again, it reminded me of "Debbie Does Dallas", without the actual genitals being shown.The story is elementary--a group of cheerleaders....um....er, what are they doing again? I'm sorry, another one of them just had sex with a football player, or in a guy's car while the car is in the car wash, or a guy wearing nothing but a jockstrap...etc. This was what a cheerleader movie was supposed to be, guys. A bunch of horny girls having sex with anything remotely resembling a man.The central character is a youngish looking girl looking to lose her virginity. The other girls look at her in shock. The rest of the movie follows her exploits as she looks to "make it" with a guy for the first time.These girls make no attempt to be actresses; in fact, I thought this was a porno when the film started (better yet, I actually thought I was watching "Debbie Does Dallas"). The guys in this flick are all looking to get laid, and our faithful cheerleaders happily obliged them. What was their big scheme right before the big football game? To sleep with as many players on the other team as possible in order to tire them out. If only my old high school cheerleading squad was THAT accomodating, maybe we would have won the state championship.I don't think this film is gonna be coming on again any time soon, but I feel privileged that I was able to see it.Sex: A+ (Plenty of scenes, seemingly one right after another. These cheerleaders just don't quit!)Women: B- (The downer--the women didn't look all that good. Then again, it was the 70's when this movie was made, so I guess they were hot by 70's standards.)Story: F (What story? You mean all that talking in between the sex scenes? Not quite story material, but all the sex more than made up for it.)Overall: A (I'm still giving the film an A because everything was played for laughs, even a couple of the sex scenes. A sexy, funny film--basically everything most recent sex comedies try to be but can't really pull off effectively.)
