Single mother Carla Moran is raped and attacked by an invisible force. She begins therapy with Dr. Phil Sneiderman, a psychiatrist who believes Carla's traumatic past is motivating her to commit self-induced injuries, rather than anything supernatural.

terrible... so disappointed.

StunnaKrypto

Self-important, over-dramatic, uninspired.

There is just so much movie here. For some it may be too much. But in the same secretly sarcastic way most telemarketers say the phrase, the title of this one is particularly apt.

Each character in this movie — down to the smallest one — is an individual rather than a type, prone to spontaneous changes of mood and sometimes amusing outbursts of pettiness or ill humor.

The true story about a woman constantly raped and beaten by a ghost in the house. The visuals for the electricity ages, but the performance from Barbara Hershey and other forms of special effects are quite startling. It was very scary and intelligent. Intense and unexpected when the ghost would strike next. Exciting and powerful. Very well done.

I'm watching this in 2016 for the first time (when this movie was realized I wasn't even born) and I can honestly say that is one of the best I ever seen about this genre. I truly loved poltergeist, but this one has something special. Is disturbing and beautiful at the same time. Which other movie has sexual harassment performed by a strange ghost, that is living in your house, around your family, your kids.. around you. And you don't even now if believe in this entity till the end, you got two points of view and you can't even understand which is the real one (do you think is obvious that there is an entity? You're wrong. Just put yourself in a character). If we want to add that is inspired by a true story, we can make it more terrifying. There are few scenes that you can't easily forgot. Maybe for someone is granted and obvious, but we are talking about a movie made in 80's. Was one of founders of this kind of movie, and if today we got Paranormal Activity or ESP is just thanks films like this. All the today paranormal movies must learn something from this one.

Carla Moran (Barbara Hershey) is a single mother with two young daughters and teen son Billy. Her boyfriend Jerry Anderson (Alex Rocco) is often away. One night, she is raped by an invisible force. Her friend Cindy recommends psychiatrist Dr. Sneiderman (Ron Silver). He thinks it's her delusion. More attacks happen. Her kids and Cindy witness and believe her. She encounters two parapsychologists at a bookstore who start doing research on her. They study under Dr. Cooley from the same university as Sneiderman. Sneiderman fears that Carla's delusions are becoming mass hysteria. This is Poltergeist except more rapey. The sexual violence is quite brutal reminiscent of grindhouse horrors. Hershey is a compelling lead. The violence gets scary at times. The special effects are not as good as Poltergeist. One thing I would change is to leave the attacks more ambiguous at the beginning. It would allow the audience is accept Sneiderman's diagnosis. There would be tension of whether this is real or this is all in Carla's head. This is a memorable horror.

This is without a doubt the scariest movie I have ever seen in my life, and I have seen many. The fact that it is based on a true story makes it even more frightening. Barbara Hershey excels in portraying Carla Moran, the victim who has been chosen by an unknown entity, almost at the cost of her sanity and her life. The lives of her children are also at stake but she quickly discovers there is no refuge from this horror. She can run but she cannot hide. It will find her. And hurt her. She seeks help, and finds it, but it is a short-lived reprieve from the demonic entity that is out to get her. She has no choice but to succumb to the whims of the evil she cannot see but only feel. If I decided to watch this movie again, I would definitely pray first!
