Mob assassin Jeffrey is no ordinary hired gun; the best in his business, he views his chosen profession as a calling rather than simply a job. So, when beautiful nightclub chanteuse Jennie is blinded in the crossfire of his most recent hit, Jeffrey chooses to retire after one last job to pay for his unintended victim's sight-restoring operation. But when Jeffrey is double-crossed, he reluctantly joins forces with a rogue policeman to make things right.

I think this is a new genre that they're all sort of working their way through it and haven't got all the kinks worked out yet but it's a genre that works for me.

The movie really just wants to entertain people.

This is a small, humorous movie in some ways, but it has a huge heart. What a nice experience.

This movie tries so hard to be funny, yet it falls flat every time. Just another example of recycled ideas repackaged with women in an attempt to appeal to a certain audience.

Bloody Heroic Bloodshed - Featuring: beginning hit when he blinds woman, assassination hit in the oceans, shootout on the beach, standoff in hospital, standoff in woman apt, shootout in killer apartment, shootout(s) in parking garages, shootout in ocean shore hideout, and finale in the churchA Hit-man takes a job offer from his boss to take out a drug kingpin. He successes at the price of getting double-crossed and now he has a try-hard cop riding his tail. He's on a mission to track down his employers and get his money - all for sake of eye surgery for a woman he blinded in a hit 6 months prior. The first half of this movie pays homage to Melville's "Le Samouraï": the entire premise of a hit-man falling in love with a singer to a point of risking his life due to his identity exposure, his employers double-crossing him, his relentless pursuit to get his money regardless of any escape options, and the police detectives getting close with the woman the hit-man admires because they know she'll lead him to them. Practically the entire story of "Le Samouraï" John Woo pays tribute to in this film.

It's the kind of movie where I like some aspects of it, but as an overall package, I didn't think it was very good. What I liked was the story - reasonably good there. The action as well was great, a bit over the top and not exactly the most realistic but it is exciting and fun to watch for sure. The music was pretty good. The characters are good as well, the main ones are all quite likable. Although the villain was a bit comical. What I didn't like? To be honest, I wasn't fan of the directing, I felt everything was rushed, almost felt like the movie was on a fast forward. There's little build up or tension or even moments where you can appreciate and absorb what is happening, it jumps from one scene to another very quickly after bits of dialogue and it got annoying fast and made me care less about what was happening. The sound as well, now I don't know the reasons behind it or whether it's only the version I was watching but the characters were all dubbed/voiced over (I'm talking about the Chinese version) which I didn't like at all. Those are my two main problems but it really took away from what I think could have been a better movie.

Probably one of the best solo films you should watch if you're interested in finding out what John Woo is all about. The Killer is one of the best known and most highly regarded Hong Kong action films and helped to put John Woo on the map, as well as working as an inspiration for film makers such as Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez. And you can definitely see how they have drawn influences from its stylistic carnage, cool under pressure characters and just from its general modern day as inhabited by people larger than life setting. The story goes that Ah Jong (once again played by Chow Yun-fat) is an assassin, who during his supposed last job permanently injures a beautiful singer (Sally Yeh), rendering her almost completely blind. Wrecked by guilt, he appoints himself her protector, but things get complicated when his former boss wants him permanently dealt with and he also has to do one more job to get enough money to get her eyes fixed. The story is not overly complicated, but it has enough substance that we get a few good character scenes and dialogues from it. But what really makes this film worth watching is its action scenes. John Woo is a fantastic action director and his gun battles are some of the best in cinema history. You feel each bullet hit, the sounds the guns make are fantastic and the scenes are choreographed beautifully. Definitely a feast for your eyes, if heavy fatality massacre is your thing. And that's about all that can be said about the film. Could the story have been better? Yes, definitely, but that still makes the film "merely" good instead of great. Perhaps you won't remember any of the characters all that clearly after some time, but you will definitely remember the action scenes and all the creative ways people get shot and slaughtered. And sometimes that's enough.

I will not spoil anything in this review, but I have to warn sensitive audiences to stay away! Not only is there violent, gory action sequences throughout, this possibly has the saddest ending to an action movie I've ever seen, and that includes the ending to "Terminator 2", another great film. That being said, John Woo's "The Killer" is an absolute masterpiece of action cinema! The action sequences are well-shot and well-choreographed, and the story and characters are amazingly well-done. Tis brilliant crime drama doesn't only provide the audience with tons of great action, but with powerful themes of friendship, love, and loss!
