Although it has its amusing moments, in eneral the plot does not convince.
View Morean ambitious but ultimately ineffective debut endeavor.
View MoreI enjoyed watching this film and would recommend other to give it a try , (as I am) but this movie, although enjoyable to watch due to the better than average acting fails to add anything new to its storyline that is all too familiar to these types of movies.
View MoreThe movie really just wants to entertain people.
Another low budget film that delivers! Great cast and story. I actually watched it because I wanted to see what Casper was doing in a horror movie, a handsome Hollywood B actor who has been relegated to mainly weak films. This might be one of his best roles! I got to make this comment as well..one thing that makes this film work so good is the house they used for the set.. just perfect. Caty Lotz was stellar as the lead give this movie a chance and avoid all of the bad reviews. This film is scarier than the recent batch of Blumhouse "big" productions!
View MoreThe Pact (2012) directed by Nicholas McCarthy is a modern diamond in the ruff. everything about this film is astounding. presumably produced under a small budget it is actually very impressive what McCarthy was able to accomplish here. what's even more impressive is that not only did he direct the movie but he also wrote it. the story that we are told here is paced and written with great diligence and seems as if it's written by a veteran screenwriter. this being McCarthy's first feature length effort only strengthens his name and makes me want to watch whatever pops up next in his filmography. so without further ado let's get into the details of what makes this film work as well as it does.as I've already mentioned, the script is an extremely important part of what makes the film work so well. while the movie is categorized as a horror movie primarily it also works as a great mystery with an interesting story-line. we are not fed much backstory at all and are forced to immerse ourselves into the mystery of what's going on. smartly written and paced well the story reveals what it needs to reveal at the right times and builds into an impressive and exhilarating ending sequence that truly is terrifying. though the ending is indeed the scariest and most tension filled part of the film, some more subtle scares are sprinkled throughout the run time and are all very effective and are not just there for the sake of the scare. each of these scenes actually play into the story and make the end product that much more cohesive.another great strength of the film would be the camera work. specifically the scenes filmed inside the creepy house. narrow and dimly lit hallways are used to the fullest potential and are filmed in way that creates some genuine tension and suspense. this camera work is obviously complemented by some great lighting as well as a pulse pounding score that really delivers some chills. on a side note the movie is pretty light on blood and gore. while this isn't a real issue, i do feel as if a little more blood (not necessarily gore) could have been used to add more impact to certain scenes and make them more grisly and raw. but it really isn't a big issue. in terms of atmosphere there really isn't one. this would be one of the few real negatives in the film. it could have really benefited from a more prominent colour pallet or some atmospheric fog or lighting in the supernatural scenes. I've already mentioned the lighting and score are great but they don't really produce any CLASSIC scenes that are really memorable for the atmosphere created alone. those scenes are more memorable for solid camera work and suspense/tension rather than atmosphere. this doesn't break the film, it simply leaves something to be desired.the acting by our lead female actress named Caity Lotz is nothing short of wonderful. I was pleasantly surprised by her performance and her character was easy to get behind and root for. Mark Steger plays judas with ease, looking very creepy and unnerving in each scene he is in. Casper Van Dien is in the film as well as a supporting character but wasn't really utilized as much as he should have been. I am by no means a fan of his, but i am aware that he can be a competent actor within B-movie territory and could have been utilized as a supporting character of more importance, or not have been there at all. by more importance I mean in terms of character development rather than plot development. last but not least is Hayley Hudson. she does a good job as Stevie but once again could have be utilized much more. being in just the one scene she made an impact but McCarthy could have given her just a tad more screen time to beef up that scene and make it a little more intense. Overall The Pact is a memorable horror/mystery with a well written script, good acting from the lead actress, some great camera work, lighting, and a great score. the scares in the film are effective and there are many scenes of genuine suspense and tension. the only real negatives are the lack of true atmosphere, and the under utilization of the supporting characters.the verdict: 8.5/10
View MoreWith a name like The Pact I'm thinking "The Craft", "The Covenant", "Witches of Eastwick", et al. Gratefully, "The Pact" was nothing like any of those."The Pact" is a blend of mystery and paranormal. You could say that most paranormal movies are like that because we have to find out what or who is causing the weird events. That is true for this movie as well as Annie Barlow (Caity Lotz) tries to find out how all these supernatural events are occurring and why important women in her life are coming up missing. In "The Pact" Annie not only has to find out who is behind all of these poltergeist actions, but what is this entity trying to tell her.I liked the movie. They accurately pin down the art of spooky and intrigue. The movie transitions from scare mode to detective mode throughout as Annie tries to solve this mystery. The story is good and so was the overall flow of the movie.
View MoreThis is one twisted piece of work. If the opening scene doesn't make your skin crawl then you have no emotions. I had never heard of this film and I just happened to come across it and thought I'd give it a try. It scared the hell out of me. I did not expect this film at all. From the very opening scene i was on edge. The film is made to make you feel uncomfortable with it's loud, unpleasant soundtrack and it's gritty indie looking camera style. If you're a horror fan then this movie is a gem. It's original and delivers scare after scare. I thought that I couldn't be scared so much anymore by horror, I thought I was completely desensitized to it, I thought wrong. This is the only film that I cannot actually watch alone. Although...this film could be Marmite. I recommended it to my friends and they thought it was rubbish and not scary, I personally don't think they watched it and just said they did.
