I like movies that are aware of what they are selling... without [any] greater aspirations than to make people laugh and that's it.

View Morebut watched this turkey today. In the behind the scenes, the director (and I use that term loosely) says that being from Scotland, he's going to get a bunch of fat (expletives) who will tell him he can't do something. Too bad he didn't listen. The plot is that a crew of 126 mercenaries are tasked with guarding one prisoner. Except they don't know who they are guarding. Or why. Well their badly rendered CGI ship is attacked by other badly rendered CGI ships, and you don't know who is fighting who or care. The survivors land on a planet, and first thing I could tell. No chicks in this movie. Already a bad sign. They set up a tent that each of them had some components for (what a lucky break) and are systematically picked off by some kind of unknown monster that can't be killed by futuristic weapons but can be killed by old-style bullets.Turns out their prisoner was a cult leader who had to get to this planet to bring about the end of the universe. and they just happened to pass this planet. What a lucky break that was.I have to comment on the lead, playing a character named "Captain Morgan". Like maybe that's what the writer was drinking while penning the script. The actor is an overdeveloped body builder who looks kind of silly in this role.
View MoreWOW!! Talk about a film that divides the audience! This is a real love it or loath it kinda movie. Personally I really enjoyed it. I noticed that other reviews are comparing it to Pitch Black - this is kinda dumb as the only thing they have in common is SAND! People can be real stupid. No, this film is far more in common with The Thing (how people fail to notice is amazing - they even have the same basic music) Lots of Carpenter touches are there, blue collar heroes, sharp humor, endless rolling landscapes full of death and things not understood. Perhaps what stops this film being a real classic is it's deference to other Carpenter works. Not least Dark Star which it has something in common with. I'd be interested to know how much it REALLY cost? $8000? Is that even possible? Maybe it was based on a short film that cost $8000? But I did find myself strangely moved when the various space dudes died. They are so underplayed that it's like watching a documentary at times. Having said that the script is kinda clunky and only about half of them can act however and I'm not sure the big guy playing the Captain is one of them. But his gun is AWESOME!! Give it a chance, if you like early Carpenter you might fall for it, just don't expect 2001.
View MoreI went through great efforts to get this movie after reading the comments on this site. I really don't have time to write reviews but I felt this was my duty as a sci-fi horror buff. This is only the second review I have written. The other was for Dracula 3000. Now to the point. This movie sucked. Plain and simple. I kept wondering if I was watching the same movie as those who wrote all those "lovely" comments. I have seen movies with bad effects, bad acting, bad sound, you name it and I've seen it. But this really sucked. I don't care how much it costs or didn't cost to make, movies like this and Dracula 3000 should be banned and the whole cast and crew arrested and jailed for time murder. By the way, Did I mention that this movie sucked. I mean really sucked. The plot was non exist and the acting was weak. It seems like the writer saw Pitch Black and got upset because he didn't think of a plot like that first so he decided to make his own ripped off version. But instead, the suck factor took over and possessed him. DON'T WATCH THIS. You'll have more fun if you pull down your pants and sit on burning coals.
View MorePeople seem to be expecting Citizen Kane here! The Planet is a B-monster movie and as such is good fun and different enough to be enjoyed. The director clearly has something to offer - not so sure about some of the cast. As for the effects? £8000 ain't a lot of effects budget.I for one would happily recommend this outing to a sci-fi head or anyone who doesn't take monster movies too seriously. If so? Watch 3colours blue instead.I noticed one review saying it had ripped off Alien. Like Alien didn't rip things off. The best thing about the film? The director. The worst thing about the film? The cast. Maybe it's time for the Director to move from Glasgow to London and find some talent. In the meantime - well done. At least you're trying to do something.
